Plans are underway to update copyright with a draft directive in progress. It seems one focus is on how much new tech companies are paying for their use of copyrighted material. They say the amount paid by youtube per music stream is far below that of other music sites like Spotify and Apple Music, who pay per stream. Youtube's model is to share advertising revenue, and works out equivalent to much less per stream. It doesn't end there, as Google itself and how it reuses snippets of copyrighted material, such as news, will also be under scrutiny. It seems unlikely for law to set the actual amount paid between companies, but it could be changed to give the industry more bargaining power. There are also plans to make content recognition mandatory so copyrighted material can be acted upon proactively.

 

Assuming the music industry gets their way and carves out a bigger cut of the pie, what does that do to Google's business model with youtube? Will they try harder to extract value from users? They will have to avoid doing anything leading to a negative spiral. Maybe a bigger push to youtube red or other premium service categories?

What the heck EU? On what planet does this make any sense? If artists don't like the pay they get from youtube then maybe they should stop uploading to youtube. Youtube is a free site, they literally can't afford to pay them any more than that.

I wouldn't be surprised if youtube puts all music behind a pay-gate just to please this cancerous music industry.

That's exactly the issue, this isn't the artists complaining, it's the greedy bustard studios and labels who want the bigger cut. I doubt the artists would see a penny of it.

It depends on the scope and how google react. For instance, maybe only music videos and similar classes will go more towards a paywall or aggressive ad system, but other content could remain substantially unaffected. LTT videos for example don't generally make use of music so would be mostly unaffected.

 

That could be another question. Say, you paid the fee or whatever to use copyrighted music, how would youtube know you paid that fee and allow your content?

 

So plenty of unanswered questions and it remains to be seen how it plays out.

To be fair they do get the ocational greedy bitch like whatshername blond idiot (Swift I think?) paroting the label lines but mostly yeah.

 

It's already sad that over half of the channels I frequent use the exact same tunes I know by memory lifted straight from the tiny library of free music youtube offers.

That's what I was thinking too. It's an optional host. This sets a dangerous precedent. Any musician could host on any site and say "YOU'RE NOT PAYING ME!!! SUE!!!" 

 

At this point the EU isn't much more than your mom telling you to pause your online game. Completely tech illiterate and only going off of an article it read on huff post.

Well the problem with that is that youtube clients and google music clients are not the same and not in the same amount. While the statement that they are not obliged to provide any sort of music streaming is theoretically true, Youtube is expected to deliver this ''fonctionality'' to their users by their users which puts effectively obliges them to offer this service.

 

Furthermore, Google Music has nothing to do with this debate. It still doesnt change the need for Youtube to stream music for the reasons I stated earlier.

Thank god Google is an American company and can give the EU the finger (only the EU citizens will suffer if Google's services are blocked by the governments, but they can't be mad at Google for that). Is the EU scrambling after the Brexit?

I don't think brexit would have affected this in any way.

 

I guess one worst case scenario is that google may decide some services are not worth doing in EU any more. I'd have to tunnelbear out of here, which I'm tempted to make routine anyway given the ever increasing internet snooping powers the UK are implementing, and are likely to get much worse post brexit.
