Oculus Touch price and date accidentally uploaded

I didn't came across the news here yet, so here it goes: The German retailer Media Markt accidentally made the product page for the Oculus Touch public, revealing a price of € 199,- (including 19% VAT) and a launch at the 21st of November. VRTech article here.

 

Quite a hefty price for a controller. At the moment the Oculus Rift+Touch would be about €100,- more expensive than the HTC Vive. Is there any way the Touch controller is better then the Vives' and would it justify the extra cost?

I don't like the feel of Oculus's controllers as much as the Vive's. But tracking for both is spot on

Just keeping this here as a All of the sudden the Rift isn't the cheaper option. And right now would be a great time for HTC to give the Vive a price cut. Even $50 would bag a lot more sales.

But if the Vive and Oculus controllers perform the same and it's down to personal preference, why would they ask such a premium? Call me cynical, but I am foreseeing a price drop right at the time when they have sold just as many controllers as Rifts...

I like the fact that the Touch controllers look more like a traditional controller split in two. They look more ergonomic. Personally I'm looking forward to getting the touch controllers. A couple of sites have said the controllers work extremely well and are on par with , and sometimes even surpassing, the Vive controllers. It's all speculation of course until more of us actually have our hands on them.

keep in mind that oculus still doesn't have room scale tracking which will prob be another 100-200 if it ever comes.

Oculus does do room scale. This is one of the biggest bits of misinformation being circulated. Even valve have stated that chaperone mode will work with rift. The only thing the rift doesn't have is the Pass through camera. There are quite a few videos online ow of people showing off rift in roomscale, some of which include people with Touch dev kits.

and at what distance does it work? and does it work when turning around etc?

You get a second camera with the touch. This can be setup as dual front facing or opposite like Vive. Videos have shown dual camera working fine in large living rooms. There are also videos which show guys with 3 or 4 camera whom claim it tracks better than Vive. I know that would include extra cost, but if you were worried about occlusion that much, it's a solution. But in all honesty, I think most setups will work fine with 2 cameras.

I think that length of the Rift cable might be a problem for some, since it's 1m shorter than the one in Vive

I am using both USB and HDMI extension cables. They work fine.

It's not just a controller, it's two controllers plus an extra camera. And it puts the total price of Rift + Touch at 898€ in Europe. The HTC Vive is priced at... 899€.

 

The Touch controllers do appear to have some advantages over the Vive controllers. They're smaller/lighter and have partial tracking of your finger positioning. But it might be prudent to wait for reviews when the finalized hardware ships.

It does have room scale tracking. Maaybe you can argue that the range/angles are not quite as good as with the Vive, but that's not generally a big deal. More like another thing to add to the long list of minor to moderate pros and cons of each VR system.

There have also been some sneak peeks at Oculus' own version of chaperone. So you'll have Valve's chaperone in SteamVR games, and probably Oculus' chaperone-like in Oculus Home/Store games.

It could be a lot worse if you do that with the Rift plugged straight into your computer.

I've had no issues at all. Simple answer I think is 1.make sure you get the right spec cables 2. Don't buy bargin bin cables. Having said that, the cost still isn't that high. 

 

The extention doesn't really add any weight or bulk to the wearer as it's right at the other end of the cable and usually that end is on the floor, even if your 6 feet tall. I've also added a 5.25" USB 3 bay to the front of my PC, so pulling no out the cables isn't really a massive issue. Still not happened yet though.

Damn thats a lot of money. But when u look at mechanical keyboards or driving wheels its not as crazy and a lot of research and development went into it.

Well you have to factor in separate shipping costs, and I don't think this leak has said anything about a second tracking camera, which you'd need for proper roomscale. So that makes the Rift significantly more expensive than the Vive, but the rift gets you an Xbox One controller and the little Oculus Home remote thingy.

It's already been confirmed that Touch comes with a second camera. It was confirmed by oculus months ago. The packaging has been shown off in the latest updated Dev kits which are considered final spec (except the magnets to hold the controllers together have been removed as people complained they could feel the magnets pulling against other when playing)

The Touch controllers do appear to have some advantages over the Vive controllers. They're smaller/lighter and have partial tracking of your finger positioning. But it might be prudent to wait for reviews when the finalized hardware ships.

You are right, mea culpa. Apparently we got screwed in the Netherlands because of the limited stock of the Rift (currently nowhere available, but back in June they were about € 800,-)

At the Media Markt in Germany you pay € 699,- , which indeed makes the Oculus Rift+Touch a very competitive combo. Can't wait for the head-to-head comparisons from the reviewers.
