Sony has come up with an excuse for you to buy Kaby Lake CPUs

So if you were planning to watch 4K HDR from Sony on your new sexy laptop or desktop then you will be disappointed.

 

Sony has announced that their service will require PCs with Kaby Lake processors in order to watch. This is for 2 reasons.

 

1) Sony doesn't trust you to record the content yourself and Kaby Lake CPUs have more advanced DRM features.

2) They stream 4K videos better.

 

Sony introduced its 4K movie streaming service, Ultra, at CES this year in coordination with its release of its 4K HDR TVs. Now the company is teaming up with Intel to bring its streaming service to any PC that has an Intel 7th Gen Core processor, which Intel introduced at IFA this week. Ultra will be available in January.

Called Kaby Lake, Intel focused on making these new chips 4K streaming friendly, so they can handle multiple 4K streams, play 360-degree content, and run VR and AR applications. Finding 4K content for PCs has been notoriously difficult because of copy protection. Basically, if you're on a PC it's a lot easier to record a film than if you're watching it on a TV, so film companies are hesitant to let people stream. But Intel's new chips support all the latest and greatest forms of DRM, which is likely why Sony is partnering with the company. More than 100 devices with 7th Gen Core processors are planned to be on the market during the holidays this year.

 

This is so not cool. Sony's attitude has shown that they are so out of touch with consumers. This is probably going to do very badly since not a single PC shipping today has a Kaby Lake CPU. Even if a single one did, nobody would buy a whole brand new device or CPU ,in the case of desktop owners, just for this. This is so stupid beyond belief.

It's tied to hardware with HDCP 2.2 I imagine. The first Zen products will be pure CPU without that hardware, so technically no. What you should be asking is if other GPUs such as Nvidia and AMD support it, the latter being an indication of whether future APUs will have it. The answer appears to be that Nvidia supports it and Polaris too. So it's almost guaranteed that Zen APUs will as well.

FYI all of Netflix 4k content is stream at 4k HEVC and because of that PC's are not supported.

Something like this have been expected, proper 4K HDR video have been limited to locked down devices as streaming boxes and TVs until now (pluss UHD Blu-ray). Obviously the reason for it not being on PC is the lack of stronger DRM, together with few PCs actually having HDMI 2.0 and no PC monitors with HDR support, yet.

 

It's a bummer, but it isn't that much big of a deal actually. Most people that own PCs, don't upgrade them, so they do not have PCs cabale of 4K HDR output anyway, so they would need to by a new one. So as long as there don't exist any pre-buildt PCs with HDR support but without Kaby Lake, it's just a problem people like us that do upgrade their hardware, and can be sitting on HDR capable GPUs (Pascal and Polaris GPUs, and all future ones), and HDR capable monitors with older CPUs. It's a bummer for us, and a restriction that really won't help (UHD Blu-ray probably will be cracked not that long after official players and software are available for PCs sometime next year), but the big companies are not just there yet that they are willing to give up on DRM. 

 

And to be fair, Denuvo has been effective. Also keeping HDR content on only locked down systems have kept HDR content from being pirated, yet. HDCP 2.2 has been breached, 4K can be pirated, but as I have understood it, no one have been able to keep the HDR data too, yet. 

 

 

I do expect similar limitations on streaming 4K HDR from Netflix, Amazon, etc., and also on UHD Blu-ray playback on PCs. YouTube might do it for some kind of YouTube Red content, maybe make it as an option for each channel to set by them selfs, but I don't think there is much chance of that. YouTube have never had any strong DRM in anyway, and they have no problem blasting people with 8K60fps

Wrong, any CPU can decode HEVC as long the player has codec for it. The only difference is hat kaby lake has HW acceleration for it. This is just another excuse for the copyright maffia to push their shitty DRM crap...

Lol when I want to save something for offline viewing I just record my screen with OBS. I don't think anything short of official malware that hunts for and closes recording software while the video is playing could stop that.

yes I mean hardware decoder, most desktop i5 and lower may not be strong enough to decode 4k HEVC. when i watch a 4k HEVC on my 4770k i can hit %80 CPU usage on VLC. for mainstream hardware decoding is almost required

I was under the impression that anything could be accelerated by the gpu...  My mistake

 

Edit : actually after doing quick research,  it appears vlc supports hardware acceleration (https://wiki.videolan.org/VLC_GPU_Decoding/) 

 

And many gpus support hevc decoding, including  maxwell and gcn 1.2

Dude, just get an HDMI splitter (the non DRM-content HDMI-cables, that is), and externally record that content.

Afaik hevc supports software decoding too? You don't need special hardware to decode it you just need capable enough hardware and I don't think Kaby Lake cpus are THAT much better.

the point isnt that if you or i can but can the user base the company is targeting.

Kabylake has a 4k capable HEVC decoder almost all other don't, Most people do not have desktop class i7 like cpus in their machines, so Sony, Netflix, etc can not guarantee a good user experience for 4k content that is not being run on a device that does NOT have hardware decoder. that is the main reason why Netflix on streams 4k content to TV only. I bet 95% of laptops cant view 4k HEVC videos smoothly, and it would KILL battery life.

Yeah it would definitely kill the battery life, but I don't really think software decoding is something that even like an i3 can't handle...

at 4k a 4770k may use upto 80% cpu usage, i link sample 4k videos down load a few and see what you get
