I always read it was the drivers that severly limped the cards in gaming applications not necessarily the hardware. Also i swear this outcome hasn't always been the case in previous generations like the 400 series.

I really would have liked more explaining videos not that just there is 24GB VRAM. Moreover saying it is for CAD work does not really help as Quadro in my experience does not help that much. I would have liked some real world cases where in can be used not that it will fail in environment it is not built for.

A lot of times these are used for computing things, and CAD, where you need to load thousands of parts in an assembly.

They are not rated for 24/7 use. @GoodBytes friend had his GeForce card catch fire just from being on for a long time.

I know it's an old version of Solidworks, but this is the time that the m6000 would be useful :) (since all the parts, down to the screws are put into the model)

 

BTW this isn't my copy of Solidworks, it's some random dude on youtube, I do have a newer version of solidworks though.

Should you game of a quadro? If you wish to do so, fine. 

Should you buy a quadro just for gaming/basic rendering? If you want a pocket repair costing $2000-5000, then yes.

You'll notice with larger assemblies / models in modeling software. Also, you'll be guaranteed that there will be no glitches in your software or you can bug NVidia for a driver fix. I don't know the state of gaming GPUs now, but when I had my Radeon HD4850, I would get visual glitches, random crashes, and artifacts when working in Revit. It would annoy the living hell out of me because I had walls going through roofs when if you printed out the page, the glitch did not exist...I bought a used FirePro V7900 (ancient by today's standards) and it runs like a tank.

 

Also, there's a massive speedup for 3D modeling programs, as the workstation GPU drivers can handle large amounts of polygons effectively in 3DS Max or Maya.

 

If you need a bigger list of programs the workstation GPUs are better for, check out the Tom's Hardware Articles for workstation GPUs. They do a good job of benchmarking them in industry applications.

There's a difference in semantics between saying "you can't game on a Quadro GPU" and saying "Quadro GPUs are not meant for gaming".

 

I'm fairly certain (I hope) that many people are aware that it is possible to game on a Quadro GPU, but you either pay more to get the same performance as a consumer GPU or you get by with lower gaming performance.

 

Additionally it is the optimization of the GPU drivers and firmware, the Quadro cards' software is designed and optimized for tasks that are different then what consumer GPUs are optimized for.

 

The Quadro M6000 12GB version is basically a workstation version of a GTX Titan X (Maxwell), their specs are very similar.  The 24GB M6000 is simply a larger memory version of the 12GB M6000.

 

Additionally with Quadro cards, nVidia manufactures the cards themselves and picks high quality parts to ensure the quality and reliability.

 

FYI, I have a Quadro M4000 and a Titan X in my rig.

Rainbow Six Siege gaming on 1440p ultra settings:

Titan X: 60fps

M4000: 30fps

I was considering of getting Quadro M6000 or M4000, saddly I'm not sure about the results as it been vaguely unclear linus :(. sure I can google the benchmark results, but nobody make videos of workstation GPU cards? do they? I'm not even sure.

It depends on what applications you use. Some see a boost, some do not. Also depends if you keep the cards under load for a long time.

 

Also, there aren't many reviews because the usual tech reviewer only reviews cards for gaming...and they wouldn't benefit from getting one of these GPUs as they wouldn't test it properly (They would just run a gaming benchmark on it...) or have the knowledge on how to test it properly. They usually don't send out review units because of how expensive these cards are and how it takes skill to know how to review the card effectively (Probably why Nvidia / PNY refused to send Linus one...). Now you have people thinking the Quadros are useless...where Linus didn't touch on the other major features of the card, like the 10 bit output workflow or that in large 3D Models with heavy textures, you can't even load the models without enough VRAM. People that do buy the workstation GPUs probably have a use / need to deploy them right away rather than bothering with reviews.

For what purpose will you use a Quadro?  I use it mainly for Adobe CC and Resolve, for the 10-bit color support.  I am not a 3D animator or designer.

 

If it's for gaming, a GTX will get you more performance for money.  Buy a Quadro if you really need it for the applications it's designed to be used with.

 

PS: I've read that you shouldn't mix different generation/architecture cards.  I could've waited for the Pascal Quadros, but because I already have Titan X (Maxwell) for gaming, I chose the Maxwell Quadro instead to minimize any chance of driver conflict.  So if you are planning to mix cards like I have, keep this in mind.

OK well in that case a Quadro card might really be of use to you.  However, between the M4000 and M5000 there is approximately a price difference of about $1000-1300.  The M5000 is roughly double the price of the M4000.  The M4000 doesn't support ECC memory, only the M5000 and M6000 does (for the Maxwell Quadros, you can see the comparison on the nVidia website).

 

The M4000 is a single PCIe slot form factor while the M5000 and M6000 will use up two slots' thickness.  The main differences in the specs of the M5000 and M4000 are:

  1. approximately 400 more CUDA cores on the M5000
  2. slightly more memory bandwidth
  3. both have 4x Display Ports but only the M5000 has a DVI port
  4. ECC memory support

 

Don't ask me about idle and workload temperatures yet, because I haven't really measured them.  Right now Corsair Link is saying my GPUs (all of them) are at 40C idle.  I haven't a clue about what the temps can be on load yet.

I think, if you really want a Quadro, just look at the specs and pricing and see which one you feel comfortable buying.  Quadro GPUs don't have that many variations like gaming GPUs.

Yeah, my FirePro right now is sitting at 60C idle (35% fan speed)...I just cleaned it out yesterday too. I've also changed the thermal paste / thermal pads (Which did drop the temps quite a bit before). I'm literally doing nothing more than browsing the forums at the moment on my PC.

 

Thanks for the information though, I'll probably pick up a Quadro M4000 now...or wait and see if there's going to be a pascal version of it coming out soon.

Thanks for the information though, I'll probably pick up a Quadro M4000 now...or wait and see if there's going to be a pascal version of it coming out soon.

I don't think I can tell you more than what I've said, we have different use cases and needs for a Quadro card.  For now, the fan in my room that's keeping me cool in this hellishly warm summer is louder than the fans from any of my GPUs, even when I am gaming.

 

If it's not urgent, perhaps you should wait for a P4000 though it might be several more months down the line.

 

Also, if you are planning to mix cards (now or in the future) like I have with a Quadro and a GTX, I've read that mixing architectures can cause driver conflicts.  Hence I went for the Maxwell architecture instead of waiting for Pascal.  I got the Titan X last year when building the rig.

I have my server in my room...and the 2U UPS runs at 48dB constantly so I kind of can't hear the GPU fan...unless I start gaming...then it ramps up loads.
