PCI-Express Gen 4 to arrive next year

So as you might know, PCIe Gen 3 was out for quite a while now.

But, fear no more, PCIe Gen 4 is coming next year!

 

It's promised to have double the data rate (8 GT/s vs 16 GT/s) and PCI-SIG already has some plans for PCIe Gen 5!

 

First card with PCIe Gen 4 did appear, it's a ConnectX PCIe 16x 100Gb/s card.

WHAT NEEDS THIS BANDWITH? like its getting freaking silly, everything should be PCI-e lol, screw USB, just have a 1x slot  but still the through put speed is just getting insaine...

As always PCI-E spec is far a head of every device. Nothing on the market can saturate a x16 Gen 3 slot yet. Hell, most devices can't even saturate a x16 Gen 2. It's nice to know it will be used widely before it's needed though.

i realy wonder who will benefit from gen 4 though, atleast it will be even les of a bottleneck and most likely be the only real "futureproof" part of a pc

Sata is at its limits. That's why storage jumped to PCIE rather than Sata 4. The amount of power required for Sata 4 is what makes it an impossible standard.

PCI-E is probably the only data transfer/connetor standard to actually be ahead of the needs of the devices. I wish every other standard committee would follow their footsteps.

It's 100Gb/s NIC not a 100GB/s - that'd be crazy

and there's absolutely no reason for it to be PCI-E 4.0 as the 3.0 speeds are enough for that

HBM3 I would imagine or maybe even HBM2. Then again that bandwidth is different from what goes through the PCIE slot. Maybe some stupid fast SSDs

Hey everyone's talking about GPUs but nobody has thought of 3D XPoint! We were shown by Micron their QuantX ssds can saturate pcie 3.0 x8 which is the same as pcie 4.0 x4'so that would be perfect! Of course pcie 4.0 x4 would still be a bit of a bottleneck but at least hit would alleviate quite a bit of it.

Except in data centers where it is the single biggest bottleneck after accessing disk (SSD OR HDD). It's actually an enormous problem for exascale computing.

No, it's 100GB/s, just like Omnipath, NVLink, and Infiniband.

Well nice how PCIe is moving forward like so. We've seen some sick upcoming SSD demos though. And memory tech is evolving quite amazing!

But wasn't there supposed to be a optic based. I remember it was mentioned way before that copper will have to be replaced on day.

Is fiber optics really that useful for a few inches of communication?

 

I'm not being rhetorical, I'm genuinely curious. I would think switching from electrical to optical, then back again to electrical carries some kind of latency penalty. If used over thousands of miles its definitely worth eliminating signal repeaters by using fiber instead of copper, but you don't have that issue in a PC.
