Can't get steam on ubuntu. Tried everything.

So I can't get steam to install on ubuntu 16.04. I have tried every top result on google, no matter what I do, when I click to launch steam, nothing happens. Occasionally it will show up in the menu on the left, and I can right click, but clicking on store or library, ect, does nothing and causes it to close itself a few seconds after. I also can't get teamspeak client to install, running the package runs it, but then nothing happens and no more prompts come up and its not installed. Completely new to linux, I just don't understand why its not happening. On such a popular distro I don't know why I have such extreme difficulty getting such a popular program.

 

Also, trying to run a test in the phoronix test suite, it asks me to input a #1-9 , #1 being "run test", however when I input "1" it simply says "select task: 1" and then won't accept any inputs and does nothing.

I remember it took me ages to get steam working on Ubuntu but sorry, I can't remember the fix. All I know is that it involved console commands after I searched around online.

I had similar issues on Mint and had to uninstall steam and then manually remove some directories and shit, this was after it was running fine but got broken after an update.

Just go to the Steam page and press install? (it will probably ask for your password.)

that would be the first thing I would do to get a program...

 

It seems to be installing, but when I run it, it simply doesn't respond or open a gui.

Open up a standard terminal and type

steam

post the output of that command here, and we can try to diagnose the problem.

First of all run this to make sure its actually installed

$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install steam

then run it in the terminal to see if you get any errors

$ steam

make sure your permissions are good, it could be getting whacked by basic perms.

I did do all the commands as sudo. not sure what other permissions could get in the way.

did you try "sudo steam" from cli?
