Chino, USA – Cooler Master, a leader in design and manufacturing computer components and peripherals, today launched an all-in-one liquid CPU cooler that doesn’t look like a liquid cooler. According to Cooler Master, it skirts the divide between liquid and air cooling by combining properties from both.

Let’s get one thing straight – it is an all-in-one (AIO) closed loop liquid cooler. Mostly. What Cooler Master has done is shrink it down by combining the radiator and pump into a single frame. This frame and two dual fans are attached to a swiveling mechanism that allows you to quickly swap between vertical or horizontal mounting configurations. This versatility gives this unusual cooler a number of unique functions for smaller PCs and air flow set ups.

“It has dimensions similar to an air cooler, but it packs a punch for its size that air coolers can’t match. And it rotates. It’s like if you somehow jacked up a mid-sized tower CPU cooler’s performance and versatility without changing its size,” said Dorrie Chen, Product Marketing Manager for Cooler Master’s thermal team.

Rather than approach the problem with existing AIO liquid cooler designs, Cooler Master just tossed them out and came up with a new angle. Combine the pump and radiator, shrink the size, trim the tubing and wiring, and suspend everything right over the water block on the CPU. This gives you the compact form factor and ease of installation reminiscent of a mid-sized air cooler with the performance of a smaller liquid cooler. Fit it onto anything from ITX to E-ATX motherboards while freeing up space for smaller cases or tighter layouts.

Rotating the radiator and dual fans has two advantages – space and air flow. If you have a narrower case for smaller motherboards, flip into horizontal mode and it still fits without blocking any of your RAM or PCI slots, even on ITX. The MasterFan Pro 92mm fans in this position will blanket the motherboard with cool air, benefiting the components surrounding your CPU. Mounted vertically, you have a tower cooler pulling air through your case. This flexible functionality is something yet unseen in either liquid or air cooling.

While they do need help figuring out how not to make the product names get out of hand, this was one of the coolers I was looking forward to getting more info on. I think it is a pretty sweet design, in concept anyway. It is what the Corsair H5 SF should have been, and the flexibility of mounting will interest SFF builders as well. Hopefully performance does not disappoint.

Cool but looks like the pump will be loud/fail. Maybe not though.

I knew this would happen eventually. But the thing is, if single 120 and 140mm rads aren't beating the big air coolers of today, I do not have high hopes for a 92m radiator. Perhaps if they had built the pump into the CPU block it would have been able to acommodate a 140mm rad, and then i'd be curious.

This. big air coolers perform on par if not better than most AIO coolers out there. I just don't see this 92m radiator performing even close to air coolers such as the NH-d15 or dark rock pro 3.

No just the pump is small and when you make motors small they tend to be higher pitched. Also working in a smaller area you have restricted space so things are changed to fit in the area so some things might be changed for the worse to fit.

If you can fit those in your case and budget, this cooler should not even be in your consideration. This is really for small cases, and builds where people are looking for sub $50 coolers and larger single tower air coolers may not fit.

 

No just the pump is small and when you make motors small they tend to be higher pitched. Also working in a smaller area you have restricted space so things are changed to fit in the area so some things might be changed for the worse to fit.

 

Nah, you can fit really good quality pumps in small sizes these days. There have been good ceramic impellers developed that can handle size requirements without compromising performance or noise. What CM decides to do is one specific case though, and we'll have to see how that works out.

I hope it's designed well enough to work even if the pump fails. Then this would be a pretty good cooler.

going by the pictures, the pump housing would allow for a 4.2cm wide impeller (max size)... a EK X-TOP DDC pump's impeller is about 4cm large... So CM has the space for a pretty "large" impeller.

It won't. There is no heatpipe to help transfer the heat to the fins, and water will just get hot everywhere and cooled by the fans to the point where it will either get hotter and hotter, and burst the coolant tubes in the radiator, or reach an equilibrium temperature which will not be nice to deal with anyway. A heatpipe added between fins would be nice contingency, but then that would just be the worst of both worlds.

Then you don't get that flexibility of rotating it. It will just be a water cooler thats 92mm in size.

Corsair's bulldog was a close enough concept and that thing was loud and not worth it. We really do need to see performance numbers and noise levels before we can call it but my gut tells me this will be a dud.

The H5 SF was a blower style cooler, this is a radial style cooler. Similar application, but I would argue this is a better design.

Yup, that's true. All things considered, I would say this is where it should be after all.

Yeah the fact that fan is not blower fan means that it should be less noisy, however it also should mean less static pressure on a smallish radiator and a tiny pump that could be noisy (true for most AIO but without the advantage of large fans and radiators)

 

I guess we'll see.

No, the main reasons for watercooling are superior cooling, and its quieter if yo want heavy look at passive coolers like nofan they are huge, sag isn't an issue with coolers due to the backplate. 

 

The cooler master air cooler that they made looks way better though, all of the wires just make it look bad.

I'm not really on board with this cooler to be honest. No real advantage over air or aio.

The entire point of water cooling is:

  1. You move the heat away from the CPU/inside of the case and onto the edges of the case, thus pushing the hot air directly out of the case.
  2. Have a radiator with a big surface area, thus providing great cooling at little noise.

This thing provides neither of those benefits. I don't get it. A normal aircooler would probably do better/same, and be more quiet.

what's the point of this?

one of the advantages of an AIO or any liquid rad for that matter is that you can dump the heat outside the case, this is just scrambling it around

 

also, multiple points of failures:

  • rad
  • pump
  • liquid level
  • tubing
  • 2 non standard fans
