I'm confused ! New AMD cards.

I'm confused.

Why has AMD released a new line of graphics cards (R7 260X, R9 270X etc) that perform significantly worse than previous generation cards ?

 

Why buy a new card when a 2nd hand previous generation card will perform better and you pay less money ?

 

Gigabyte X58 UD7. Core i7 980X. Radeon HD7950. 12GB Corsair memory. OCZ Vertex 2.

They don't perform worse, they did the same thing that Nvidia wid with the GTX760 and GTX770, they used the old GPU added some more features, increased clocks a little and BAM new GPU.

 

The real new cards are coming.

Can you point to specific examples of the new cards (R7, R9) performing worse than their previous generation counterparts? Everything I've seen so far is the new cards performing a little bit better than their previous gens.

 

As an example, the R9-280X is basically a tweaked HD 7970 GHz Edition, and the benchmarks that Linus/Slick performed showed it just above the 7970, which is where it should be.

That would be the R9-290X at the very least. I'm very interested to see how close it comes to the Titan. I'm expecting it to match or beat the GTX 780 at a better price point (Since it's a smaller die size, the yields and manufacturing costs will be quite a bit better/lower), and I could see it potentially matching or beating the Titan even.

I have a feeling that a 290x might just be a small taste of what it and mantal can do

They rereleased the cards for cheaper( about the price of the 7000 cards atm) with some updates and turned a 7970 (flagship) into a 280x (second best gpu) and so on,

you shouldnt upgrade if you got 7000 cards but if you got anything older, it s an option.

They don't perform worse, they did the same thing that Nvidia wid with the GTX760 and GTX770, they used the old GPU added some more features, increased clocks a little and BAM new GPU.

The real new cards are coming.

except for the part where they reduced the clock speed of the 280x compared to the 7970 but it s negligeable

but yes all the other cards had performance boosts...

Can you point to a source for this? Also, the 290X is using a new architecture, so comparing it's clock speed to the 7970 is pretty meaningless. As an example, the 260X (I think, it was either the 260 or the 270) has a clock speed of 1100 MHz, which is faster than any other stock AMD GPU, but obviously it's slower than 270X/280X/290X/7870/7950/7970, etc.

It's confusing because AMD has made things less granular by essentially eliminating the "in between" tiers of cards (all 7X50 GPUs are gone).

 

R9 290X is far and away above everything.

R9 280X is synonymous with 7970.

R9 270X is synonymous with 7870.

R7 260X is synonymous with 7790.

R7 250 is synonymous with 7730.

 

So 3 cards down from the top in the 200 series is about equal to 6 cards down from the top in the 7000 series.

You just contradicted yourself there :P You said "280 is new architecture" but you also said "280X and below is re-branded". Mistype? I assume you meant 290 and 290X?

The new cards don't perform worse. They perform the same and in some cases just a bit better than the cards they are meant to replace. Right now I would just get, for example the 7870 instead of the R9 270X because they are the same thing.

R9 290 - 512 bits

 

 

 

i love new way to separate new range of cards, is easy friend

 

R7 is middle range

 

R9 is high range

that was a typo. i meant 280x not 290x.

of course clock speed doesn t matter accross architectures but in this case it s the same.

but rly look at the reference spec for the 7970 ghz vs the 280x it s 50 mhz higher for the older card without the gpu boostthing.

My opinion is companies change the clock to indicate how high it is binned (see FX 8xxx series).

 

So, a higher binned 7970 is a 7970 GHz (which is faster).

 

A 290x is a higher binned 7970 GHz (which means it's faster).

 

Now they are all very similar, but the 290x, when overclocked to the max, should beat the 7970 and 7970GHz. This means the extra 20-30$ spent on the 290x is justifiable.

As far as I know it'll beat titan (at least it's what some "leaked benchmarks" are showing). I personally expect that nVidia will cut some prices and release a new GK110 card to compete with AMD. Who knows?

290x is nothing like the 7970.

Do the older ones support mantle?

Mantle is supported by all GCN cards (That would be 7000 series and forward so far as I know)
