New build planning - constructive criticisms welcome!

chillxnate

1. Budget & Location
I'm located in Louisville, KY, USA. I'd like to keep the budget around $1800 USD. Sub $2000 USD for sure.
2. Aim
Main system. Gaming mostly. Web browsing and storage.

3. Monitors
I'd like to get run three monitors on this system. I'll be getting new ones. They aren't part of the budget but are up for discussion as well, as I've really not invested any time into considering what I want to get.
4. Peripherals
No peripherals will be factored into the builds budget.
5. Why are you upgrading?
I've been on a "one new build a year" habit for about a decade now. I'm selling my previous PC to a buddy this weekend for $1200 USD so a big chunk of my budget will be coming from that. I'd just like to build and am ready for something new!

Now that that is out of the way, here is a list of perspective parts: *REVISED PER YOUR COMMENTS*

There is no case or GPU selected because neither are yet available. I want to build this into an EVGA Hadron Air, and am waiting for more information and pricing regarding the AMD R9 series of GPU's.

With that said, I do not know if the memory selection is correct. I don't know if that cooler will cause compatability issues to warrant the purchase of LP memory. I also don't know if the case and motherboard would allow me to get a bigger cooler, IE the Dark Rock Pro 2.

I will be doing some slight modding to the Hadron Air as well. I want to make a cut out for and mount a Be Quiet! Silent Wings 2 80mm fan (http://tinyurl.com/a43cvsn) for exhaust off of the CPU cooler. I also may replace to two top cause fans with nicer, quieter ones to be used as intakes... Maybe. ALSO, I plan to filter the top panel if I do end up doing this. In addition to all that I plan to take a stab a removing nonessantial power cables and shortening (maybe) and sleeving the ones that will remain.

Let me know what you guys think so far. Any and all input would be appreciated!

Get rid of that western digital green, It's overpriced for no reason. Get a seagate barracuda 2tb-3tb for less money.

There should be enough clearance for the ram. And if the fan gets in the way you can always mount it in pull config. If you wanna save some money on the ram you can get 1600Mhz - same performance. If you're gonna be using this pc for 'mostly gaming' then you could get a 4670K and invest the savings in the GPU. Lastly if you're planning on getting anything else than an R9 290 or 290X there's no real reason to wait since the lower models are rebatches of the HD 7xxx Series.

Looks good, however, if you just plan on gaming I recommend a 4670K and 8GB of RAM. However, if you video edit, or use applications where hyper-threading becomes useful, stick with what you have :)

You could also drop that 840 Pro too an Evo or just 840, I don't think you would see a real-world difference.

For the money on that cooler you could get a NDH14 or a Phanteks TC14PE instead.

Ignore this I didn't notice your case choice

Yeah, but they wouldn't be black :( AND I'm not sure they would fit. From what I've seen online I've been lead to believe that only tower coolers with a total height of 140mm will fit. That may be totally wrong, thought.

Yea, they most certainly would not fit.

I would suggest getting a 256 SSD, space goes fast. And as people are already saying, yea the Evo is a great  value, and will be just as fast. I say if you have the budget, stick with the i7 and 16 gigs of RAM. I had 6 gigs of RAM in my system and it wasn't nearly enough for my needs. I run 3 monitors, and RAM goes quick with lots of windows and tabs open ;). I am literally only in a few instances of Chrome, have itunes open, pandora playing music, and fb messenger on Windows 8 x64, and I am using 5.3 gigs of RAM... Thankfully I have 12 gigs now :).

Also, yea a different cooler might be a good idea. I honestly just run Hyper 212 or Corsair h100's if possible, so I am a bad person for cooling advice if air is what you are after.

H80 is a decent cooling option, its all black, and always looks good!

And yea, 1600 RAM is FINE. I just assumed you picked 1600, because there is no point in getting 1866 to be honest. Sorry I didn't mention that before.

That's a solid looking build. The only thing I would say, is if it's your main system. I'd be concerned as to whether a 128GB SSD is enough space. You'd be pushed. I decided on my Samsung 840 250GB SSD instead of a 128GB Pro version for the capacity, and I have to say that the performance is great, no complaints. Also, factor your O.S into the build too.

Also, I've used around 90GB of space on my SSD, and I haven't gotten around to installing everything yet.

Thanks for all of the input!

Concering the 4770k vs the 4670k argument, is the 4670 a better performer for gaming applications or is it simply "good enough"?

They perform pretty much the same while gaming :) Saves you some $$$

I think the gap between the two will get wider with the advent of BF4. We should see games using more than 4 cores in the next year. I love my i7 so I'm biased, but I'd stick with the i7.

I was actually just thinking of this, wonder how much they will effect, but wouldn't hyper-threading be less effective than actual cores? To the OP the decision is completely upto you :)

Yes, threads would be less effective than cores, but the only hexacore intel chips are £400+ so at the consumer level, I'd wager the i7 would still take the cake as the fastest, because of the fact AMD's FX-8350 has cores which are a lot less powerful.

Hey guys! Thanks again for all of the comments! Per your input I did a little more research into this build and have since revised it a bit. I'm now coming in way under budget, so it looks like I'll have some more cash to sink into a GPU and new monitors! B)
