Question about Gray to Gray ms and other things

I'm looking into getting this monitor: http://www.lg.com/us/commercial/documents/LG-commercial-monitor-SPEC-29UB65-P-021420-PR.pdf

(Spec list is at the bottom.)

 

I'm a bit confused on a couple things.

1) Under response time it shows "14ms, 5ms (G to G)"

2) Under frequency it shows a whole lot of things, so I'm not sure if it's a 60hz, 75hz, or 90hz display

 

So ya, I just need to know why it's showing 2 results for response, what's Gray to Gray (G to G), and what the actual refresh rate of the monitor is.

The monitor will have a delay of 14 milliseconds between receiving the data for the image and actually displaying it. 5 milliseconds are used to cycle the color of the monitor from one extreme to the other meaning the monitor can go from white to black to white again really quickly passing by grey and grey. It's basically how fast the image can change which is slightly different from responding to change.

 

FPS not advertised, so expect the default 60Hz and anything more to be a bonus.

 

 

Blue screens eh? Did you try setting it to Wumbo?

Alright, thanks. I'm assuming it will reach 75Hz over Display Port as well?

Yes. The spec list shows that it supports DVI, HDMI, and Display Port.

Agreed anything below 23ms is not even noticeable to a human

Just read a review of the monitor.

 

When plugging the unit via DisplayPort, our test PC and its NVIDIA Quadro 1800 display adapter recognized the "LG Ultrawide" and set the system resolution to its native 2,560 x 1,080 with 32-bit color at 60Hz. The display looked great; nothing was stretched or shrunken. Without further adjustment, we paid a visit to the CRN Test Center's standard test images for LCD panels.

No, response time is not a measure of delay. 14 ms is the time it takes to change between extremes (black and white, and back) as per the old ISO standard, 5 ms is the time it takes to change between two unspecified colors, not sure if it includes the return trip, because it's completely unstandardized.

Did you read the manual? It says 14ms response time, not G to G scale. Check your facts before calling someone out.

Blue screens eh? Did you try setting it to Wumbo?

"Grey-to-Grey" response time is a measure of transition time between two shades of grey, or in other words two colors ("grey" means any color besides black or white).

 

The other response time of 14 ms is the transition time between black and white and back, rather than two shades of grey. This black-white-black standard is the old ISO standard for measuring response time, which was replaced by grey-to-grey measurements.

I'm almost positive the 5ms refers to the grey to grey and the 14ms refers to the latency between GPU to the monitor displaying it. I'm aware that response time can refer to G to G but when it says Response Time is X and G to G is Y, then the input lag is X and G to G is still Y.

Blue screens eh? Did you try setting it to Wumbo?

Nope :P Latency would not be labeled as response time.

Response time isn't a single number for LCDs, it is a range of values. The transition time is different depending on the starting and ending colors. So there are many different numbers that could be listed as response time. There was an old ISO standard for measuring response time, which was black-white-black. That is what the 14 ms is. In general, most companies report grey-to-grey instead, because it's more representative of images that actually get shown on the screen, but some companies still list both.
