7970 Xfire or r9 290x

Assuming the rumors are true about the r9 290x, is it worth waiting to grab this single card solution for that price, or should I just get another 7970 for $300 and Xfire?

Surely two 7970's would be more powerful than an r9 290x anyway.

I would personally go for the 7970s because they are so damn cheap right now. You could also pick up a 7990 for like $550 right now if you don't mind 2 GPUs on one card. Also, what are you doing with these cards?

Gaming on 1440p. I think two 7970's would be best option too.

I think you should go for the 7970s. The 290X would probably be a better choice for a multi-monitor setup. Although another option could be getting 2 280Xs because they are rebranded 7970GHz editions. You might be able to overclock those even more and get a pretty good system overall. There isn't a difference in price between the 280X and the 7970. Maybe like $20 or something.

If i grab another 7970 now I'll probably go Maxwell in 2014, then I can SLI that later if needed.

Unforntualy AMD has an issue with multi GPUS in their 7000 series. It's called micro stuttering and it well, stutters making gameplay not as smooth as desirable.

Also in my opinion always buy the best single gpu in you budget.

i thought maxwelll is rumoured for Q1 of 2014. Can't you hold off till then as a 7970 is still a very good card and maxwell shouldn't be too far off. But its your money you buy whatever you please

Yes, but the thing is that the 8000 series will not be available for consumers, only for OEM manufacturers. The "rebranded" R7 and R9 series have slight improvements and optimisations over the 7000 series, but the 7000's are so cheap right now, it would be a shame to not getting one right now.

Although, I haven't heard anything about Radeon 8000 for a while now. Is this still the case?

Get the 7990 if you are going to xfire two 7970s. Its cheaper to go that route and you get 6 GB video buffer.

Oh, I thought you said you bought a used one for $310. This is brand new for $290.

Get a 7990 because 3x GPUs has no microstuttering issues and you'll have more performance
