Russian PM orders state agencies to switch to Russian-made software in 3 years.

"Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has approved a plan under which local software companies receive strong preferences in tenders announced by federal ministries and other bodies of state power."

 

"The software must be available all over the country and the share of license fees paid to foreign legal entities must not exceed 30 percent of overall proceeds."

 

I don't exactly blame Russia for wanting an OS of their own. IDK what they were using prior, but I know a lot of the systems produced here in America have become much more aggressive and intrusive. My question would probably be whether this OS would be soley for the State's use or if everyday people can use this OS and if it would suit their needs. Just another step in the new cold war I suppose.

 

I wonder what kind of hardware it will be optimized to work with. I heard AMD recently struck a deal with Russia's ally China and China has an OS of their own as well.

Anyways, this makes sense from a lot of perspectives, but I doubt it will actually change anything other than give more official credence to illegally copying/replicating foreign made software. 

 

The OS really isn't that important in the modern age, and cyber security right now is a shitshow on a national level with the offensive capabilities of the top national efforts FAR beyond what any reasonable defense can withstand (esp since cyber security is highly weakest-link susceptible).
