Need help on a 2000$ build plan

My friend ask me to help plan his 2000$ build.This is what i came up so far.

 

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz (3.6GHz Turbo Boost )

Motherboard: (Im not really sure about this one because he's keen on not OC the thing so i dont really know what to pick )

Video Card: Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1080 Xtreme Gaming Premium 8GB (This one is a must have btw,he like this one)

Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro Series 8GB ( 2x4GB ) DDR3 bus 1600 x2

Storage: SSD Samsung 850 EVO 250GB

Storage:  Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB (is there any different between blue red and black ??)

Case: NZXT H440 White

Power Supply: Corsair RM Series 650W - 80 Plus Gold

if he wants to overclock get him a overclockable cpu

get any z170 board for a k series cpu

ddr3 doesn't work with skylake. must be ddr4

black is performance red is for nas 

dont get a rm power supply as they use cheap capacitors, evga g2

If you're going to spend the money on a GTX 1080, you are going to want to get a Core i7 for maximum performance in gaming for more CPU intensive titles.  If you don't you may spend $2000 and find that you don't get the best performance you could be getting.

Maybe, but I would go with at least a 5th generation Core i7 with that modern graphics card.  Or if he is willing to, you could get a GTX 1070, and with the money saved get a 6th gen Core i7

You can find some very good 4k monitors for cheap 2nd hand. I've seen a few ASUS one's going for about $200 ish

What kind of monitor do you want? Because a 1440p or 4k one is what I'd suggest to make the most out of your 1080. But, with the I7 build you can still use most of its power even at 1080p

he's not into hardcore fps so im guessing any mid range monitor will do,and i have speak to him about the 4k thing and the answer was because he like the card.And Will a h170 go well with 6700 ?

Yes, you only need the Z series chipset if you're going with a K series CPU

Best to decide on a Monitor first and then plan the gpu around it. So for 1080p/1440p a GTX 1070 would do fine or if you plan on going 4K then get the GTX 1080.

Why this build???

NVME boot

titanium psu: stable overclock

high rated cooling: overclock (throw that noctua in the spot behind the mobo on the lian li case)

Monitor: 144hz, 1ms response FREE SYNC, 2k (honestly 2k is plenty of res for me, 4k is overkill)

gpu: realistically I feel like the 480 can handle just about anything at 2k with ample smoothness when coupled with yonder freesync monitor.

EDIT: I did not see the "this one is a must have, he likes this one" next to the gtx1080. Sorry for wasting your time folks, my build falls apart when spending that much on the graphics card.

The build generally looks good for a gaming build. There are a few things you may consider changing.

If you are not OCing the CPU (which isn't a necessary thing for gaming) you should be good with your choice. This is up to you and your budget. 

Regarding the memory, you could easily go for a single 8GB stick as you shouldn't notice performance differences but you'd be able to save some funds and have more room for future upgrades. 

 

The WD Black is a good performance drive designed for extensive and heavy workloads. Games on the other hand don't really rely on the storage's performance for anything else but the loading times so unless you try to cut those times a bit and you don't necessarily need the 5-year warranty you could easily go for WD Blue.

WD Red is a drive designed for NAS and RAID usage and may not be the best choice here but it can still work if you want to use it for one reason or another.
