R9 390X or GTX 1060?

SEPH

Ok so where i live(Poland) i can currently get a R9 390X Sapphire Nitro for the price of the gtx 1060(one of the cheaper ones) and i cant really decide. I dont play any games that are biased towards any of the cards and i plan to buy the high end cards of next gen once they come out so this is a short term card. I will overclock, i dont have a gsync/freesync panel, Im playing on 1080p and power draw is of no concern to me. So what would you guys suggest i do? Also as a side note the rx 480 costs the same as a 1060 here so yeah... I would love to buy amd that is why if the 390x is very close to the 1060 then id go for that but if after OC the 1060 is faster then i guess ill just get the 1060.

390X is MUCH more powerful under DX12/Vulkan but the 1060 is slightly ahead in DX11. If you want less heat - 1060. If you want future-proofness - 390X

Performance should be similar in games. However, I would go for the 1060 due to:

  • lower power draw.
  • lower temps.
  • lower noise.
  • Way better video encode and decode ( 4K H.265 12 bit hardware acceleration).

I don't think 390X is much more powerful under DX12. On vulkan I agree but vulkan is heavily based on mantle. And I don't think vulkan will take off nearly as much as DX12.

It is - the 390X's A-sync is MUCH better than a 480 and thus gets an additional 10-20% bump compared to the 480. If you look at gains - Hawaii gains the most due to it's jaw-dropping compute performance

10-20% is not MUCH more. Not to mention the GTX 1060 overclocks pretty high and the custom cards perform way better than the founders edition.

I'm not an Nvidia fanboy but I think after overclocking the 1060, it should be pretty close to the 390X. It will lead in Nvidia titles, lose in AMD titles. I don't think it's worth it to go for older card unless the 490 gets released.

Well - the 390X and 1060 both OCed will still be close in DX11 but it's a clear win for the 390X in DX12 (Hitman, Ashes, Quantum Break) and Vulkan (DOOM)

10-20% on top of the 10% lead the 480 has in DX12/Vulkan. The 1060 OCs, yes - but scaling is piss poor and the difference between 2GHz and 2.2GHz is 3-5fps. Kepler scaling was good, Maxwell was meh, Pascal is shit. Ask @App4that

yeah thats what i think as well, the main thing for me is the feature sets, and im kinda butthurt that the 390x doesnt support HDR, though neither does the 1060.

yeah i know but with the BS prices here im not given much of a choice, and unfortunately the 480 is a fair bit slower than a 1060 or 390x, and that may and probably will change over time but the fact remains that this is a card i will use for more or less one year.

Between a 390x and 1060 I'd go 390x. Not only will it hang in current titles but will also perform well in upcoming titles. Though that's at the same price, if one is cheaper go with that card ether way.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

480 is about 10% slower in DX11 and 10% faster in DX12

Can you show me a DX12 title where the 390x beats the 1060 OC by 20% or more.

I don't think so.

Have you seen it though? I wasn't impressed. It looks like a good monitor, so all they did was take a good monitor and slap a proprietary tag on it. Cool marketing but not worth worrying about.

This isn't simulated HDR like Valve did - it's hardware support :D

Look nice, but just better screen nice. And they take a page out of Nvidia's marketing book and have a slider that shows shit settings compared to HDR. Now IF HDR allows cheap monitors to look like expensive ones then maybe, but you still have a cheap monitor. But if the worst thing that happens is more people buy better monitors good show AMD.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

well i have seen pictures in HDR on my monitor and the same pictures without it taken by me so i know its no BS and you know i actually really like HDR. Also having a nicer image is for me at least better than having more fps, especially if im still hitting 60fps.

At 1080p the 480 can get 60fps in just about any game at high-ultra
