Thanks, but I was aware of these settings. I don't like the idea of trusting my OS to just give up sending data like that. I'll still do it, but a secondary program to enforce the OS is always nice.

Those secondary programs does just registry changes, which is where Windows stores the settings. It also adds a bunch of server blocking on the Host file, but Windows telemetry data doesn't use the host file, else it would be too easy for malware to redirect those to their servers.  So, it is really blocking nothing.

I was thinking of playing around with Linux on a spare 1TB Toshiba Sata 2 Hard drive.

So you'd recommend using a Linux distro and running the steam client  instead of that?

Yeah, I tried a few different distros and settled with Mint Cinnamon however I honestly think I'm.going back to El Capitan this weekend. I don't know why but I love OS X, I actually prefer it to Windows.

If your looking at Linux but are unsure go Ubuntu Gnome (Unity Desktop is aweful IMO) or Mint. Both are easy to use, nice looking and provide a full fat Linux OS with a fairly powerful UI to boot. Expect to be learning bash whatever distro you choose though, terminal is unavoidable in Linux.

While we're on the topic, I hate how SteamOS separates BPM & Desktop into different users, it makes manipulation of game files really hard.

And I want a Linux distro to dual boot so I can play around with Linux and make C++ test programs for Linux,

EDIT: I will stop since this is severely off topic.

Quite detailed post.
Either way, for those that still didn't, would be good to claim license while free upgrade offer still lasts. I'm sure you can reinstall older OS anyway if you'd want to, but can also have W10 license.

@GoodBytes I just did a fresh install of Windows 10 (after I upgraded two W7 pro and one W8.1 pro licenses). I want to make the product that's being used is the first W7 license, but when I try to change the product key I get an error saying:

"You are running Windows 10 Pro. The product key you entered cannot be used for this edition. Error Code: 0xc004f210"

The license I'm using is a W7 Professional license.

Are you in Windows 10 setup?

I installed W10 as I assumed it was maybe caused by not being connected to the internet as I'm on wifi. So I went to System page and tried to change the key (as I assumed it was using the license from the last install which was w8.1, which I don't want it to use).

Is it a laptop running Windows 8.x? If so, the product key is in the UEFI, and that is what Windows 10 will use.

Also, you can't change system specs for the license it was originally tied to. If you want to do that, you need to install Windows 7/8 that you want, activate it (keep in mind that OEM licenses are not transferable. They are locked to the first motherboard installed), and then you can upgrade to Windows 10. And once Windows 10 is installed and activated, only now you can re-install Windows 10 with your previous version of Windows.

So in other words:

Install Windows 8 (say), then upgrade to Windows 10, update Windows 10, and now check if your Windows 10 is activated.

Now you can use your Windows 8 key if you clean install Windows 10. You have to do this, in your case, because your Windows 8 license was tied to another system.

Honestly, if MS does not plan to release a new Windows version and just keep on updating Windows 10, then they should just open-source the thing anyway... They do not plan on making any more money on the OS so why not make it open and provide paid support for the Enterprise? Then Windows would probably become my favorite OS...

I did that. I installed W7 then I upgraded to W10 then I installed W8.1 again, then I upgraded, then I formatted and fresh installed 10 and I went to use the W7 license but it wouldn't activate, so now it's activated through the w8.1 license I believe. Also, they're not OEM licenses.

The error code that you get, is telling you that you installed the wrong edition of Windows 10 for the product key you are using. Are you SURE it is Windows 7 Professional, and not Home Premium?
