PSU Requirement for I5 + GTX 1070 ?

Tai Tran
Go to solution Solved by RuLeZ,

Without OC 500W, with OC 550W to be sure.

Hey guys, just a quick question for a small topic, what is the minimum requirement of a PSU to run an I5 + GTX 1070? what about I7 + 1070?

And btw, can someone teach me how to check this out myself ? like what to look at on the cpu and the gpu and then how can I determine what is enough after I know those information ?

Thanks 9_9:x

i5-6600k overclocked with a 1070 would easily run on a 550W PSU.

wow really? I looked up on google and some say it's better with 600+

No way, the TDP is 150W, thats like the GTX 970.

The 1070 uses about 180W and the i5/i7 are about 120W for the rest of the system. Though go for an i7 if possible. I5s bottleneck higher end Pascal (1070 and 1080)

Well 500-550 is enough.

you need to check the power usage of the items.

Example:.

50w CPU power usage

250W GPU power usage

dvd a few Watts let's say 50W

ssd or HDD 50W

and Motherboard 75W

You need 475W, take 500W and the fan will be aggressive or 550W if you want your PSU be ok.

 It's just an idea..

different ppl say different number. I'll go with the gigabyte G1 so what's the power usage of it? and what's your recommended PSU ?

Like I said, 500W for no OC is ok, 550W for normal OC. At 1080p the i5 will botteneck the GTX 1070.

So I have to check pretty much everything I have in my system and buy a PSU with 50W+ right ?

I'll be using the Dell 21:9 1440p monitor. Does that matter? Or does the i5 just simply bottleneck the 1070?

50W for DVD? NO way, its like 10W or less.

Motherboard at 75W? No way, there isnt even enough cooling for that, I would say more like 20W.

And also, if he really uses 475W, a 500W would not be enough, would get too low power efficiency and would damage over time.

Then its ok, you could even use some GTX 1080 then.

It will still bottleneck. Not as much but you will still not be able to get constant 100% usage from your GPU. If you have a locked i5 the bottleneck will be large. If you OC a 6600K or 4690K then you can get the bottleneck down to 10% or less at 1440p

that's just an example I think. I would have to check pretty much everything and buy a psu with 50W+ right compare to the amount I need? or more than that?

My computer pull ~300w at the wall with a 5930k and a MSI 1070 Gaming X when running Unigine benchs.

That would be enough, if you want your fan to be much quite you can get a little bit higher Watts maybe 250+ or more.. Mine is 1000W while I need only 600W if I added another GPU it will reach 800 somethings. That was my plan at the beginning.

Dont think so, 3440×1440 is way more pixels than 1920x1080, i5 will do fine.

Well the I7 is $100 more so I'm considering not to go with it if I don't need to.

System power draw shouldn't be over 400W even with OC.

Basically you can have a 500W PSU (as long as it's a quality unit) and OC with a GTX1070.

Recommended specs usually say stuff like 600W+ because potato PSUs lie about their power specs. To prevent conflict Nvidia and AMD always put higher numbers on the recommended spec.

I can link you system power draw  GPU reviews if you want to. The GTX 1070 is very effcient.

Before you guys get into a fight about that, how do you determine if the i5 will bottleneck the new gtx 1070 and 1080 ?

I only choose 80+ Gold or better PSU so I should be good with 100W+ compare to the power usage of the whole PC right?

Because it actually does, even a i7 5960X can bottleneck GPUs. It's not in the sense of "your CPU sucks so your GPU won't work as intended", but in the sense that GPU configurations like this are very fast and they will crunch through the graphics on games leaving only the "CPU computed" stuff yet to be done.

This happens on many games, where a GTX 980ti, a GTX 1070 and a GTX 1080 will score very similar FPS results (usually like 100 or more fps) on a game. So why isn't 120? 150? 200fps? Why do 3 different performing cards show the same -high number? It's because the CPU is still figuring the game elements out. Even the 5960X insane CPU will lag behind on these titles where the graphics are "too easy", the only thing you can do then is get a 6700k and OC the complete hell out of it. Then the frames go up.

Mind you this is only on 1080p on some games. If you go to 1440p or higher it's a different story, there is so much work for the GPU to do that it doesn't make you feel the CPU is "lagging behind".
