4770k Strange Temps With 1.27v on Air

Hey everyone,

I had some spare time today so i thought i'd push my 4770k past its current 4.4 ghz (@1.21v). I had around 4.6 in mind, although i know on air, anything past 1.25 will get very hot. I am using a  hyper 212 with a corsair SP 120 fan and stock thermal paste. When at 1.27v the CPU is still only running at an average of 75 degrees with IETU which seems really cool for that voltage(Using Realtemp, Aida64 and IETU to check temps because i didn't believe them). Is this normal from a 4770k? The hyper 212 is an entry level cooler, but it's sure doing a good job. Should i trust the software temperature  monitors, or start to back off?

Any help would be great!

Also, if you guys have 4770k's on air please let me know your temps/voltages/clocks. I'm really curious.

Thanks in advanced!

4770k @ 4.6Ghz, 760 SLI, OCZ Vertex 3 128GB, 16GB 1600mhz RAM, Hyper 212 Evo, 750w PSU

i think your temps are perfectly fine

I ran my 4770k on air, noctua nhd-14

I needed 1.35V for 4.6 GHz  max temp was 90c on air after running IETU for 20 hours.

Im not a big fan of budget coolers and I  always recommend people to save up and buy a high end cooler for they will benefit from it now..and in future builds.

heres my OC guide check it out. the first two screenshots in the second thread are on air at 4.6GHz

Hey, thanks for the great reply. With IETU max temps were 77 but averaging about 72. I was going to buy a Swiftech h220, and stay with my 4670k, but when my brother was buying his new computer i payed him $120 and then got a 4770k and he got my 4670k :).  I'll have a look at your guide. Thanks again!

1.9V under LN2 :) fairly instant death.

dont give your cpu any more than 1.5V under any type of traditional cooling (air or water)

intel warranty's the 4770k for 3 years if you can provide proof of purchase and there is no physical damage of course.

I think the intel protection warranty is useless.

Intel kept this ------> @prokon customer very very happy.

pleasure doing business with you guys.

I would think that two 460's would still be enough these days.

thanks -tear- -sniff- it means a lot to hear you say that.

I game @  1080p

for some games its fine COD BF3 and far cry 3 no problems playing maxed out.

however Crysis3 and BF4 are playable but I have to turn down settings to make the frame rate enjoyable

I only payed $120 for both cards 2.5 years ago... Im ready for an upgrade..with the way pricing looks 7970 crossfire is looking very very attainable.

If it makes you feel any better Crysis 3 makes my 660 Ti's sweat too, I can't max Crysis 3. You got a good deal on those imo, I would hang onto them so in like 20 years you can build a retro rig.

I've got 2 760's, they're great. Maybe not as powerful as two 7970's but don't use as much power and all that stuff.

nvidia seems to require less power on paper. I am a big fan of company's deploying good power efficiency strategies as technology evolves.

seems like a great time to buy 7970s I wonder if the prices will get any lower when the r9 officially hits retail.

I'd imagine they would. Would you consider buying anything from the R9-8 series?

I would based of of real world performance benchmarks and pricing. 299.00 +\- 25% seems reasonable.

I look at the r9 280x as a 7970 with dx 11.2 support. is that a poor assumption?
