5820K or 6700k? x99 v z170

Hello!

Looking at what kind of CPU to purchase, main things ill be using this cpu for will be as follows:
Gaming ( alot )
Lots of programmes open at once, including the game.
Rendering.

It's been a constant battle in my head as to what cpu will suit me best, I know the 6700k is newer and " better " for gaming as many youtube tech channels have shown in comparison, but how will it fair up with a 1080 coupled with it? will it have enough horse power @ 4k.
I'd like to hear what your arguements would be for each cpu.
and why?

Thanking you very much ! - TPG

The other reason I would recommend the 5820K is upgradability... With X99 you will be able to pick up a used Xeon or, heck, even a 6950X for under $400 in a couple of years... With the 6700K you have the best...(for this socket anyways) You can't go up...

Right now the E5-2670 costs under $60, while it used to cost $1500...

In a couple of years you will be able to pick up the highest end Xeon E5 for $200...

Whilest this is true, how good are 6950x's going to be in a couple of years? money isn't too much of a problem here,
I do how ever like your arguement of DX12 making the most of more cores, and also how its easier to upgrade as they all use the same mobo's.
You've made me reconsider for now some things. Id like to hear some more points of arguement.

Would you happen to have a link of the information of DX12 taking advantage of more cores? I'd like to read up on it.

I have heard that DX12 uses more cores... I don't have a source for that but, games ARE using 6 and 8 cores at the moment...

I can confirm that as my 5820K has high usage on all its cores while gaming (usually)

The Xeon E5 v3 and v4 CPUs are Socket LGA2011-3 and therefore compatible with the same Motherboard as the i7s...

And if you buy an enthusiast CPU now, you will keep it for at least 5 years before it starts becoming irrelevant..

(Unless Zen 8 core CPUs retail for less than $500, which is HIGHLY unlikely)

i7 6800k. Don't buy old hardware, if there's new one out.

With Rendering, you will benefit from that. But i would go straight for the i7 6800k.

From Haswell to Broadwell... You don't see a HUGE jump in performance

http://www.anandtech.com/show/9482/intel-broadwell-pt2-overclocking-ipc/3

I think you should pick up a 5820K overclock it to ~4.6GHz and call it a day... I am almost certain that it would ouperform a 6800K that so far has been able to overclock up to 4.3 - 4.4GHZ...

I'v barely looked into the 6800k.
Hows it stack up? got any links for utube of how it goes? im interested, might spend the extra bucks if its worth it.

This is at stock speeds and thus not as fair, as the 6800K runs faster at stock than the 5820K... If you OC both they will be pretty much equal...

It's up to you... I would suggest that you buy the 5820K, as the 6800K offers little to no benefit if both are overclocked and use those $80 on another part of your build...

The Broadwell-E are pretty shit in general for overclocking. Most can only do 4.3GHz or so, while Haswell-E, 4.5-4.6GHz is very common. Yes, the new chip has better IPC. So at the end, they're kind of even out. One advantage Broadwell-E over Haswell-E is a better memory controller. Many Haswell-E chips has stability issue with RAM over 3000MHz.

Mhm, I'm not too hassled if OC isn't that great, the cpu will be great even with a average OC.  should be an all round great chip, and new so comes with all that fresh gear. Thing is, its gonna cost an extra 200/300 than my 6700k build. But Hey, itll probs be worth it, Ill just have to save that little bit longer.

It's definitely better and will surely last you longer than a Z170 build...

Broadwell-E offers 3-5% improvement in IPC from Haswell but doesn't overclock as well.... So you might end up getting better performance from the Haswell 5820K than with the Broadwell 6800K, especially if you are lucky and your chip can reach 4.7-4.8 GHz...

If you are willing to wait for a bit for better OCing Broadwell-E CPUs to hit the market then the 6800K will be the better option, unless you really need single core performance, in which case, the 6800K is the way to go as it has Turbo Boost 3.0...

I did the calculations...

A 5820K @  4.6GHz is 2% faster than the 6800K @ 4.3GHz...

And these clock speeds represent what most people have achieved with these CPUs...

@TheProphetGaming

So, as you stated, rendering is on your last place and gaming&multitasking on first and second. Therefore, I see no reason to steer away from Z170 and 6700K. That Skylake CPU has better IPC, supports much faster RAM = In gaming 6700K+fast DDR4 is much better than most of X99 CPU's. Also, Skylake i7 6700K will last you at least 3-4 years, so no worries there.

On the other hand, if you're doing SERIOUS rendering work and not the occasional one, go ahead and purchase 5820K.

I really don't see any reason for 6700K to be slow at rendering, ok, it will be slower than 5820K and stronger(more expensive) X99 CPU's but that's nothing earth-shattering unless you run some kind of studio and every second of rendering time is of most importance to you. Also, it will produce much less heat even Oc'ed to 4.6GHz so another worry less.

Skylake i7 6700K, good liquid cooler, some premium quality motherboard, premium quality PSU, 16GB/32GB 3200-3400MHz or higher DDR4 RAM, a couple of SSD's and GTX1080 will easily last you a good 4-5 years (with the exclusion of GPU of course, you might want/need to upgrade that).

Nice to hear a new arguement for the 6700k. So hard to choose hey, get so caught up in all the marketing and everyone elses opinions, i kinda lose track and touch with what i really need.

Anyways, thanks for the input.

You'd be pretty suprised, 6800k actually out performed a 6700k in single core performance on a video i saw when both were OC'd.
Once again its luck of the draw for silicon lottery i believe.

But yes im probably going to go 6700k.
I gotta admit though that 6800k would be darn good for the extra money, but wouldn't really be necessary for me.
