How to slow down internet drasitcally with a 1900AC

Cvdasfg

I have a linksys WRT 1900AC router, my neighbors have been on my wifi (even though I told them to get off) and would like to teach them the fun way... Anyone know how to make the speed unbearably slow while still connecting? I was thinking half a megabyte

Depending on the router you could switch visitors to a guest network and have it disable that channel during certain hours. Not sure if that one can do that or not.

Create a guest network and turn it on/off manually and/or put it on a timer to only run during certain hours.

/You can also use QOS (which the router probably has) to limit the speed of (their) specific MAC addresses and/or just create a guest network and limit the speed of the guest network and only give them access to the guest network.

Yeaaahhhh.... @Cvdasfg you're making this harder then it needs to be.

Step one: Change the WIFI password

Step two: You should be able to boot out any active users, who will then reauthenticate (if they have the new password)

And that's it?

If you need to give them WIFI access, but want them to use less, there should be a method to institute Bandwidth Quotas.

I used to have that router a year or more ago, and if I remember correctly you can manage each device and set bandwidth priority, permission, and schedule when they have access to the internet. Options should be under QOS.

I would advise you just change the password.  Anything they do on your connection could be blamed on you.  Also, if they are connecting to your router without your (or the owner's) permission, they are breaking the law.

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

QoS, Password change/enable, and MAC address filtering, are all settings you should consider looking into.   If my mother's pos ATT uverse modem/router has that option, I know the WRT1900ac router does.  I DON'T recommend letting neighbors use your connection for legal reasons.

-=--- Ryan_Vickers   said it best...

If your neighbors, for a simple example, decide to watch child pornography, FBI and other authority entities of U.S.A. can track them down and they will be led to YOUR home even if they track the source of the content consumption to the LOCAL ip address of that neighbor's pc/device that was used to watch that content.  They can and will sent a freaking SWAT team in your house and treat you like a terrorist.  Even though the neighbor's pc did the consuming, the IP address was received from your, ( or whoever is the account holder of the internet service being given to your home), home and authorities will hold the account owner liable for that crime.  YES.  IT DOES happen occasionally, more often than one may want to believe.  Although from my understanding, an IP doesn't technically equal a person, the feds treat an IP as an identity of a person.  This is what Wendell from Tek Syndicate had an intelligent rant about and how asinine they are in how they treat the innocent.

Just explain to the neighbor in case he or she asks about your internet that you cannot share your connection for legal reasons.

Also, grab a laptop.  Connect wirelessly to the router, and walk outside your home and pick certain random spots of distance to stop at.  See at each stop where your connect weakens to the point of disconnecting.  IF it's all the way to the end of your driveway, then consider turning down the power of the antenna's wifi broadcast from 100% to something like 60 or 70% at most.  Or, change the wireless type to Wireless A or AC only.  Most pc using noobs dont' have a clue and they won't know how to change their own wireless ethernet card's settings to account for that and won't be able to connect.

You could also turn off SSID broadcasting.  This will make it harder for them to connect.  All you'll need to remember is the name of that connection and you'll still be able to connect.

Also, post " No Trespassing " Signs in plain view.  This way, anyone who is quick and experienced enough to blackhat hack into your router to gain internet access ( say at night during your sleeping), you can explain to the authorities about your broadcast power level, your No Trespassing signs, and usually those two things alone keep you in the clear.  Yes I know all of this seems like overkill and fear mongering, but you'd be surprised at the bs that criminals get away with these days just because an innocent person isn't a lawyer, or an I.T. professional.

I wish you a well and safe internet future good man. :D
