Is VR just another flop like 3D?

People say VR is the next big thing, but this was same thing that happen with  3D, it was just not practical and 3D died due to lack of content and is the same happening with VR?

Not yet, I'd say it's more popular than I expected but still limited in audience, but not a failure by any means.

When it gets more affordable and graphics evolve over the years, it should start to become more practical.

We'll have to see in another years since VR contents are so limited and the hardware is so expensive

The  tech is cool but it's WAY too expensive. Plus you need a $1000 PC to run games.

It is too early to tell. Adoption for vr has been low, but this is to be expected. Honestly, all that will matter is price. If vr sets and computers that can run them can becom affordable for the average consumer, then vr adoption should significantly improve.

I'd say not - It may be in the gaming space, but VR has huge potential in scientific, construction, and other technical industries. 

 

3D was an entry to VR - but VR is far more immersive and encompassing. We'll just have to work through the best way to control and implement VR.

the reason 3D flopped was because the 3D glasses were pretty unpractical, and the good ones actually didnt cust much less than our first gen VR headsets do.

 

i'd see VR becoming huge easily once the cost of the headsets goes down, and the computer hardware we strap them to becomes cheaper/faster (which is a given)

VR never really caught my eye. It's expensive both computer and gear wise, you need a fairly open room and it has caused some issues with people's eyes because of the screens being to close. If I got given one for free I would probably just sell it and use the funds to upgrade my setup for a more enjoyable experience. I prefer to use my monitor for my entertainment.

I don't think it's going to fail as bad as 3D but I don't think it's going to be very successful.

What? They still have 3D movies all the time. VR is the beginning of the future. You might not consider it now but that is because the options are pretty limited and bare. The price is also steep but there are hundreds of VR conferences happening all the time. Some with really cool stuff for more immersion. I see AR more practical but we simply need better batteries. Honestly if we found better batteries we would excel years ahead

i never understood the push for vr when the headsets cost about $800... i guess its a good estimate on the card's performance, and it kinda is. but strangely i dont see a whole lot of vr benchmarks.

VR headset prices should comedown to somewhere around 300s by next year

VR has a much better chance than 3D movies. VR is an interactive experience that you can be in control of unlike 3D movies where you're only a spectator.

But they weren't as interactive as say an HTC Vive. I would take my Vive over my 3D HDTV just for the motion controls.

In a consumer space I don't see VR having much of a future. In movies and other types of videos it might become a thing but the problem with that is, is that it sounds like making movies for VR is difficult. But maybe for animated movies it might become more of a thing.

 

Like @SamStrecker Augmented Reality will become more of a thing because of its versatility.

Corning, about 4 years ago published a video that some of you have might've seen "A Day Made of Glass 2: Same Day. Expanded Corning Vision (2012)" in places like national and state parks, I could see AR being used like the way Corning kinda used it. But I'm not sure display technology will get to the point of being like that in consumer devices but the AR glass display that the park ranger was using could be like a HUD kinda thing.

I think that VR is probably only suited to some specific applications. I do, however, think that AR is going to be a big thing once all the kinks get worked out and it gets better. Imagine a pilot that can "see through" his aircraft (actually, they almost have that). Imagine racing sim style racing lines being drawn on actual roads, or better IFF/situational awareness for the military.

In contrast, VR has very few applications: It only applies to things where you do not need to see what else is going on at the same time.

VR will become more popular imo when the prices go down, although it will most likely be used mainly for professional applications. I can see Augmented reality becoming much more popular tho

i think for VR to really take off it's gonna need >4k per eye @120+ hz with HDR and !50+ fov, and gvs
