Trying to build a Folding@Home Rig

Henry

I'm trying to build a rig with as high a PPD/$ ratio as I can.

Thoughts on this system? : http://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZWkVYr

I'm assuming GTX 1070's are the new best card for PPD/$, replacing the GTX 970

Folding for LTT since April 2016.

In my opinion, you should get something more than a $100 processor to run three $480 GPU's.

Spend the extra $$$ to get the FX-6350 or 8350 and OC the shit out of it with a AIO watercooler.

But it's not for gaming, it's for folding. From what I've heard, you don't need a powerful CPU for folding with GPUs.

You can add custom parts at the bottom. Use that to add another 1070.

You can still get pretty good extra PPD for the little bit extra money you'll spend on the 8350, especially if you OC it.

Then you may as well get a Pentium G4400 and a motherboard with 3 PCIe x16 slots double spaced.

I went with this because I read that you should have at least one CPU core per GPU.

Possibly dumb question:. What's folding?

Uh there's a board for Folding@Home on the forums and there's a thread about it there I think

The rx 480s have better performance per dollar, and does folding use a lot of ram? if not go for 4gb.

 •E5-2670 @2.7GHz • Intel DX79SI • EVGA 970 SSC• GSkill Sniper 8Gb ddr3 • Corsair Spec 02 • Corsair RM750 • HyperX 120Gb SSD • Hitachi 2Tb HDD •

What do the RX 480's get for PPD? I have no idea how much ram folding uses, so I just put 8gb just incase.
