AMD wanted RX 480 to be near GTX 960 performance.

And I assure you GTX 980 is far faster than RX 480, unless you're lucky to overclock it on aftermarket.

Price wise yes, performance wise no so what are you talking about since you were to vague to understand.

980 performs better than a 480 without a doubt but unless you can find one for  around 250 or less wouldn't bother buying one, I also wouldn't buy a reference 480 either due to it's issues and the fact aftermarket will for sure be better.

You mean RX 480 to be near GTX 970? GTX 960 is a much slower card.

From the benchmarks we have seen as of now (with the reference cooler of course) the performance is around GTX 970 and R9 390 performance.

there's like one or two games currently where RX 480 is faster

980 is faster in the rest of them

the thing is 980 is like double the price or something... so I don't really know how you compare the two...

No, with reference board, cooler and immature drivers, it's between a 390 and 390x. Hard to say where it goes from here. Faster in DX 12 though.

Its closest current equivalent Nvidia card is the 970. It serves to undercut the 970.

One thing to keep in mind is that review benchmarks are always a best case scenario, where they are using overclocked i7's, fast Ram (helps in some games), Clean Windows Install without any garbage running in the background, and air conditioned test environments.

Even for a 480, you will need an overclocked i5 at least to get most of the performance from your card. EA frostbite games and other modern engines will really benefit from hyperthreading at this performance level. It's not like having an i3 or an FX CPU will tank your performance completely, but just keep in mind that a 480 has greater cpu overhead than a 980, so you need more powerful CPU cores for the 480 to get the most performance out of it.

Notice just how much more performance a 970 gets out of an FX cpu compared to the 390. a little ironic that an AMD cpu is worse for AMD GPU's, but that's the case for dx11. We can argue dx12 overhead till the cows come home, because we'll be waiting until then before real (more mainstream) dx12 games like deus ex: MD come out.
