Rx 470 TDP and Performance Revealed

So I was just randomly browsing the Radeon.com site created by AMD, and clicked on the part about Polaris. When I scrolled down to the bottom, I saw this:

This means the rx 470 has a tdp of 110 watts. I also saw on toms hardware's review of the 480 that the 470 has 32 CUs which translates to 2048 SPs. Reducing to that amount of SPs and 7 gbps ram wouldn't cause the tdp to go down by that much, so this means the 470 probably has lower clock speeds than the 480. As well, there are some benchmarks here we can work with.

 

If we look at firestrike, we see the 470 getting a score of 9090. I am assuming this is the graphics score, which would put the performance of the 470 in between that of the 380 and 380x. Not too bad, considering the tdp.

 

I can't find many ashes benchmarks for mid range, but it seems that here the 470 performs around a 380x. Again, I couldn't find much for Hitman either but it seems the 470 performs around the 380x in this as well. Double again, I can't find much for overwatch but it seems to be around a 380x again.

 

So it looks like the 470 will be quite a decent card. Judging by the tdp I'm guessing it will use the same pcb layout as the 480. I also do believe that when the 470 is overclocked, it can reach 90-95% of a 480s performance. The 480 may be a good deal, but I think the 470 will be a great one.

It also has 256 less shaders. My guess is that it will be between 150 and 175 dollars. Basically, a pretty good deal.

Considering the 480 already performs similar to a 380x in many games and benchmarks, the real value card is the 470 then.

A 480 is like an overclocked 970 -- much better than a 380x.

Ok. The key thing for me is that it would have to beat out a GTX 750ti by a substantial amount, and in my case be the Gigabyte OC version (love my GTX 650ti OC 2GB-if push came to shove I'd keep it and get rid of my GTX 970 as the 650ti is the card that replaced my ageing Riva TNT2, and it looks good too).

If RX 480 = GTX 970

 

then RX 470 = 88% GTX 970 = just over R9 380X.

 

Probably can pass for VR if overclocked

I'm pretty sure the 380x already passes VR capable, at least once overclocked.

Yeah the 470 should pass VR spec while OC as well.

Remember that the 380X overclocks relatively badly (100MHz OC according to anandtech).

 

The 470 will likely be able to push at least 1400 (300+ MHz OC) assuming it isn't artificially power limited, putting it at least up to 480 perf. It has more wattage headroom than the 480 (110W vs 150W under the 150W max allowed with PCI-E+6-pin), meaning it could OC higher than a reference 480 too.

 

In sum, the 470 is going to be a much better card than the 380X once you get to OC. If rumors hold it should be THE top perf/price card on the market. I so hope it releases sooner than later.

 

EDIT: Just want to point out this graph from PCGamer's review:

That's an RX 480 at 1340MHz. I and most gamers play at 1080p so looking at the 1080p figures, you see an average 5FPS, sometimes over 10 FPS increase, just with the 80MHz overclock. Just hammering down the 470 OC hype: from 1206MHz stock to 1400MHz+, we may see upwards of 10-20 FPS gains when max OC'ing the 470. Please AMD do not power limit the 470!

I think that 470 and 460 are only 2-way CF and only 480 allows you to do more than 2-way CF. I have heard that somewhere .. not sure where. Might be PCPER Review or JayTwoCents .. not sure.

Considering that in theory you could unlock 4GB 480 to 8GB 480 as the 4GB version actualy has 8GB physicaly on it just the 4GB are locked ... and the PCB of 470 and 480 is supposed to be the same ... maaaaybe you could actualy do that.

It wouldn't really makes sense though. It'd just add manufacturing costs for the 4GB variant therefore we wouldn't be able to see the sub £200 we can on certain ones. Also, The 290X had a 4GB and 8GB version, but the 4GB didn't have the 8GBs of chips on it, did it?

Not all the memory chips can handle 8Gbps speed or even 7Gbps so the 4GB version of 480 can be just 8GB version with those 4 other chips not meeting the specifications disabled.

 

Also for 480 it is not required to have memory speed of 8Gbps .. that is just for reference 8GB cards, the 4GB reference version is clocked on 7Gbps only. Cards from AIB partners can range anywhere between 7-8Gbps.

It was like that for reviewer cards which were 8GB ones. We'd have to see a 4GB to see if it really has those.
