The title made me think you were going to set up some sort of caching or using different filesystems for different types of drives, but I gess installing different things to different drives is a kind of optimization.

That's alright but I'd suggest putting game clients such as steam or GOG galaxy on your SSD but then set your games folders to your HDD. This has the advantage of snappier load up times of these clients.

Also there's a way to free up quite a bit of space on your system SSD if you can live without the hybernation sleep mode (this is one of two sleep modes and it writes cache data not only to your RAM but also to your HDD during sleep mode while the other one, which will still work after that, only caches to your RAM).

You just have to open "CMD" as administrator in your Windows 10 search bar and then type:

powercfg -h off

After that you just have to restart your PC and you should end up with a few GB more free space. If not, then just delete the file "hyberfil.sys" under c:\ and that should be it. After all that the "hybernate" option is gone from windows but you can still use the other sleep mode.

I like to do more than this.

 

First of all, I created a folder called zSystemFolders on my D: drive (regular hard drive). I named it with z at the beginning so that when browsing contents of the drive it will always be last, out of the way. If you prefer it to be listed first all the time, use "!" instead of "z".

 

Next, download SysInternals Suite from Microsoft, it's a package of system utilities which contains an application called junction.exe which has the sole purpose of creating symbolic links. Basically, you can create a virtual folder - when an application tries to access the contents of that folder or create a file in that folder, it's transparently redirected to another folder on your hard drive.

 

First of all, I created the folders TEMP and TMP inside zSystemFolders and then set the environment variables to the new location. In Windows 7, hit Start and then right click on Computer, select Properties , then Advanced System Settings, then in the ADvanced tab click on the "Environment Variables..." button

If there's TEMP or TMP defined above in User Variables, edit those entries to point to your new TEMP folders on your D: drive.

Scroll in the list below at System variables and look for TEMP and TMP and do the same.

 

Next, I've made a list of few folders that are commonly used by applications on the C: drive, and recreated the folder structure under zSystemFolders.

For example, I noticed that every Windows Update creates an "uninstall" package or backup and some application installers also store data under "C:\Windows\Installer" so I've created "D:\zSystemFolders\Windows\Installer"

 

Now we can use that junction.exe from the SysInternals Suite to create symbolic link.

Extract SysInternalsSuite somewhere easy to locate, like C:\Temp\SysInternals

Open a command prompt with administrative rights. Click Start, then type in the Run box cmd and cmd.exe should show up as a result.

Right click on it and select "Run as administrator".  Once you have the console open, use "CD .." to go back one folder until you're in C: then use "CD Temp" , CD "SysInternals" to go in "C:\TEMP\SysInternals"  (or wherever you have extracted junction.exe).

 

Now, junction.exe can't create a symbolic link if there is already a folder already created on C: so for the example above, move everything manually from C:\Windows\Installer to D:\zSystemFolders\Windows\Installer and delete the C:\Windows\Installer folder.

 

Now, type:

 

junction.exe c:\windows\Installer d:\zSystemFolders\Windows\Installer

 

and a virtual folder should show up in C:\Windows called Installer - when you double click on it, you're automatically redirected to C:\zSytemFolders\Windows\Installer

 

I did the same for the following folders :

so basically Steam crap, whatever Thunderbird caches and mail data (it's a mail client/reader) and Firefox profiles/cache/settings folders and My Games which is often abused by various games to store saved games. The only catch is the folders on the C: drive HAVE to be deleted before creating the links, so MOVE data to new folders on D: drive first, and delete the original folders. With some folders, it's tricky because Windows File System Protection may kick in, but a workaround for that can be just rebooting in safe mode and doing the procedure in that mode.

you don't need to manually partition the SSD, unless you absolutely want to

just select the drive and click next, Windows install will do it for you

 

as for redirecting folders from one location to another, use symbolic links with either:

Windows 10 provide much easier to change Documents, Pictures, Videos directories via Settings. Luke

That would probably be a good topic to cover, yes.  Although, if I separately bought an SSD and a HDD, I would just use them as such.  It will probably get you better results than using the SSD for a cache.

I'm a bit suprised this wasn't shown in the video, as it is the main topic : 

 

I would advise to unplug every drive except your SSD (or system drive) when installing. Otherwise Windows might (I'd say will, but I'm not 100% sure it's always the case) put the boot partition on the 2nd hard drive, wich will cause issues if you ever want to remove that hard drive. Basically windows won't be able to boot without the 2nd hard drive.

 

There's a way to solve that after the fact, but I'd rather prevent it.

Something you may want to check out is Steam Mover. It basically does everything @mariushm explained in his post. The description probably doesn't mention it but this tool does not only allow you to move steam games and libraries but also every folder you like. I am using it to swap data dynamically between SSD and HDD.

 

What to do:

  • Install your OS on SSD
  • Install everything else including Steam on SSD
  • Link all your personal folders to your HDD
  • Create a new Steam library on your HDD
  • Install some/all games

Then:

  • Open Steam Mover
  • Browse to the (game-) folder you want to move & select it
  • Select the destination path somewhere on your SSD
  • Move it!

At this point the original files will be moved to the folder on your SSD. On the HDD's side at the location you normally find the just moved folder you will find a so called junction point instead which leads to the file's current location. If you finished your game and decide to put it back onto the HDD, just use the tool and revert the process.

 

Benefits:

  • Everything is stored locally, no need to download everything again
  • Faster than a regular download
  • A real blessing if you run on a dialed internet conncetion
  • Patching games is not affected at all
  • Easy to revert if you need space

"Downsides":

  • Compared to downloading you store way more data on your drives you might never use again
  • Usage of your drives will increase, which may affect its lifespan

The tool handles folder directions by creating junction points as stated earlier. If you just copy installed programs around your hard drives you sooner or later run into problems like registry keys not finding required files.

 

Also I mentioned that you can't only move steam games but every folder you like.
