Intel Apollo Lake %30 Faster than Braswell

I have 2 questions: 1 what the F is Apollo lake and Braswell? Shouldn't it be kaby lake and haswell respectively. 2 would you mind including a quote form the article ?

Specs: CPU: I5 6600K (4.5 GHZ), GPU: RX 480 (stock), Mobo: MSI Z170A tomahawk AC, RAM: Corsair 16GB drr4 2600, CASE: NZXT S340, storage 240GB crusial SSD and a 1TB WD HHD

Braswell is one of Intel's SoCs (used in things like tablets).

Apollo Lake will have Intel's new Goldmont Atom processors, and according to this they will be 30% faster than Airmont (the current CPUs in chips like Cherry Trail).

 

 

Pretty good performance increase (assuming it's clock for clock or at the very least at the same power consumption and TDP). They are also moving to hardware accelerated HEVC and VP9. I can see these chips being really good in a small HTPC-like device.

Kind of a shame, I mean but unfortunately (or fortunately) desktops and laptops aren't as common as they used to be. More and more people just use their phone or tablet.

8 lanes would be enough :D maybe even 4 lanes depending on GPU.

Pretty good performance increase (assuming it's clock for clock or at the very least at the same power consumption and TDP). They are also moving to hardware accelerated HEVC and VP9. I can see these chips being really good in a small HTPC-like device.

  Yeah, HTPC use is what I've been keeping my eye on when it comes to things like this. I've currently got a repurposed full size mid tower that handles all of my NAS, media center, PXE server, and soon to be firewall / router duty (if I ever get around to actually doing it). In a virtualized environment (Proxmox atm). But it's rather large and I'd like to downsize. But Atoms were never really viable. And buying all new ITX stuff was going to be too expensive. So this is definitely welcomed news for me if they can keep the prices low.

For things like HTPC and NAS solutions these will kick ass. One of the big reasons to buy a prebuilt solution is because you can get good performance without a huge power draw. As well that means less heat dissipation needed, which means cheaper and quieter.

 

Something like this will be awesome when it finally comes time for me to need to upgrade my NAS and my NUC. Upgraded power on the NAS means i could encode video on it with something like plex if i wanted to. Though i would need to find a good RAID card i assume because most atom motherboards tend to have very few sata ports. And on the NUC side it means i could go with the cheapest model and still have it be able to play 4k video (hopefully) and streaming steam games (which works great on the current model).

So at this point its pretty obvious that they aren't being stalled by the laws of physics if they can achieve a 30% performance increase. 

 

What the heck intel,  give us better processors for the desktop already

They can't. The reason why they can do this with Atom is that Atom is an extremely simple core with a lot to improve as it is. This isn't the same case with the desktop lineup where they already have gotten latencies as tight as possible as-is.

I'm pretty sure they can, they just don't because AMD is nowhere to be seen.  Atoms are small chips,  yes,  but they could always use simpler graphics in cpus for the desktop.  There used to be a time when you could get a ~250mm² cpu for regular prices.  But the newest skylake chips are near 120mm²

You're conflating economics with raw performance, and that's not necessarily the same thing. Yes, Intel's CPU's aren't getting any more affordable, and they're charging MORE for something that's only marginally better than something 5 years ago, and that is indeed due to a lack of competition from AMD, but that doesn't necessarily mean that Intel can pull performance out of their ass.

Far more of it is going into Omnipath and Knight's Hill (successor to Knight's Landing). And the bulk of Intel's money is still spent on foundry equipment.

For desktop the problem is raw mathematics. Look at the Agner Fog instruction latency tables for x86 architectures. Most instructions are already at perfect timings. All Intel can do for desktop is improve the overall pipeline. For Atoms where heat is the issue, Intel still has room to add in the tech from Sandy Bridge and later processors to improve performance while staying in super low TDPs.

 

You can't compare improvements between Atom and Core. They're two very different designs and have very different pros and cons. For desktop it's all down to the programmers to use newer instructions. The old ones have been perfect since Nehalem for the most part.

I suppose that'd be interesting. Android does already at least support Keyboard and Mouse input, and could support external displays but Micro-USB and to a lesser extent USB type C is a little limiting. But I suppose maybe a future iteration of USB 3.1 Type C could potentially support a lot more data not like 10gbps but maybe 100gbps or even maybe 1tbps. Not sure about supporting more power though. Would be interesting. But I think the current power limitation of 3.1 Type C might be plenty.

But I suppose maybe a future iteration of USB 3.1 Type C could potentially support a lot more data not like 10gbps but maybe 100gbps or even maybe 1tbps. Not sure about supporting more power though. Would be interesting. But I think the current power limitation of 3.1 Type C might be plenty.

I think it's doable. It would require at least 3 ports on the phone (one for the peripheral hub, one for the GPU Box, one for power), but the phone doesn't have to be running on battery, since this is a desktop setup.

It could be all done with an accessory on a future iteration of USB 3.1 Type C that supports more data. But I don't think the current data limitation of USB 3.1 Type C can handle a GPU box, a Peripheral Hub and additional power. I suppose out putting the image would be done through the GPU itself.
