Best GPU out of this list?

sirbonneville

Hi all. Within the next few months I'm going to be upgrading my PC. I'm double minded about this and would like a fresh opinion. Here is my question; what is going to be the best for games?

Two RX 480s

Two R9 390xs

Two GTX 980s

A GTX 1080

I'm kind of inclined towards the R9 390xs, since they have 8gb of VRAM and I want to have this PC for a good 3-4 years. Also, what CPU should I pair this with? I would like to stick to Intel CPUs.

Yeah. It would be AMAZING to run two 480s in Crossfire. The 8gb variants, though, so that I can be prepared for the next few years of gaming.

Get a single GPU and wait, since you are upgrading in a couple of months and there isn't any non-AMD benchmarks of the RX 480 and the AMD GPU to compete with the GTX 1080 hasn't been announced, you CANNOT make your decision now.

You should always go for the single most powerful GPU that you can get when upgrading. If you already have a top tier card and want more, then SLI/Xfire. There are inherent problems with SLI/Xfire that make a single card more appealing in nearly every scenario. The only time I can think of that I would want two cards over one was if I was running them in parallel and offloading work to one while using the other for something else.

If you're going to be editing, I'd suggest a CPU from the x99 platform. Otherwise a 6700k will do just fine.

Wait for reviews and opinions on all the non reference 1080 with custom PCB before you decide.

Don't go for dual GPUs. You'll have more issues than framerate improvements.

Go for a single RX 480. It'll most likely be decent.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Kind of hard to say as the RX480 hasn't actually been released yet.

GTX 1080 outperforms them all, if you need it and have the money for it. Other than that, if not a 1080, I'd suggest you wait for the 1070 as it'll release in 6 days. You can also wait for the 480 as it releases on the 29th.

Why the hell on earth would you need two RX 480s?

Are you working on a  big project related to Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning?

You will never use all the power of two RX 480s..

Or you just want to get them cause you have the money? In other words, do you just want to show off with your new build?

That's a pretty big difference in performance. I'd wait it out to see how fast the 480 is and to see if the issues with the 1080 get resolved.

What is your budget? If it is around $800 then get 1 GTX 1080.

The point was, 99% of the time, you should buy 1 graphics card.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Even the HOF 1080 on Ln2 only gets 2.5Ghz. Doubt we will be seeing 2.7Ghz this generation.

If your question is, objectively, "the best", the answer is the 1 x GTX 1080, no argument.

If your question is, what is the best price/performance? The answer appears to be 2 x RX 480 8GB cards, provided that your game supports CF or multi-GPU in DX12. We will need to wait until the benchmarks come out later this month to verify all of this though.

I would not be buying the R9 390X. The reason for this is that the price/performance on this card is not good enough. If you want something like that, get 2 x R9 390s instead (or, you know, the 480s). The speed gain on the 390x is only about 10% on most games (up to maybe 20% on a small minority of games) and the price premium on the 390x over the 390 is large for such a modest gain.

I have 2 x R9 390s. I have not ever regretted not shelling out the extra gold for the 390x versions. You won't either.

You gotta get it to 3200MHz so it can be in sync with your RAM.
