32gb of Ram for big minecraft servers

2x 1gb network for great speeds but nothing overkill.

Welcome to 12th LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here.

This is a very scalable topic. You could make a barebones rig and run a minecraft server on it no problem. However, I wanted to keep things interesting, so the budget is set quite a bit higher than "barebones." It is $1,400, in fact.

This PC should not have a big footprint. It is a server, so cool and quiet operation is important. For this usage scenario, peripherals are unimportant. You don't even need a monitor.

Also, a good storage solution is important. You get bonus points for a NIC, which would help with server bandwidth.

The contest will run from Friday September 27th to Thursday October 3rd, with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd reserved for voting.

Hop to it!

UPDATE: Congratulations to @Blackterror25 for winning his first build-off!

I don't really understand the question. The usage it is designed for is hosting a dedicated server for a videogame.

Different games require different hardware, like a bf3 server would need better specs than a minecraft server

Yeah. A specific game or list of games would help as well as what we're shooting for as in as many people as possible or mods/etc.

I'll look into getting a list. If it helps for now, I leaning towards more intensive, hence the high budget. Something like Battlefield, ARMA, etc.

I decided to make a super small and portable server so you can take this anywhere and have a awesome LAN Party going in minutes. I didn't have a particular game in mind when building this, but it should definitely handle minecraft.

CPU:  Intel Xeon E3-1275 V2 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($351.98 @ SuperBiiz)

CPU Cooler:  Noctua NH-L9i 57.5 CFM CPU Cooler  ($47.99 @ Amazon)

Motherboard:  Gigabyte GA-Z77N-WIFI Mini ITX LGA1155 Motherboard  ($113.98 @ SuperBiiz)

Memory:  G.Skill Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory  ($135.00 @ Newegg)

Storage:  Sandisk  64GB 2.5" Solid State Disk  ($59.99 @ TigerDirect)

Wired Network Adapter:  Intel E1G44HTBLK 10/100/1000 Mbps PCI-Express x4 Network Adapter  ($249.99 @ Newegg)

Case:  Lian-Li PC-TU100A Mini ITX Tower Case  ($109.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Total: $1368.88

(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

(Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-09-28 17:57 EDT-0400)

Reasoning:

CPU: Fastest Xeon I could fit in

Cooler: Noctua so it will be -9001 db

Mobo: My favorite mini ITX board for 1155. Plus, since it has wifi even the ultrabook owners can join in on the fun.

Storage: SSD to boot and a 1TB for storage. Anything more is really overkill for a gaming server unless you are running tons of people. (Note. Because of my case I was limited to only 2.5 in drives)

NIC: 4 Ports for snappy multiplayer action

Case: This dictated the rest of the build, but I really wanted to see how small I could make the rig.

PSU: Awesome little SFX from silverstone, not much better than this.

i9 25.6 GHz with NeuronThreading, 256gb 6000 MHz RAM, GTX 990 OC 3024MHz 12gb, Skeletal X99 motherboard, 1 Petabyte SSD, Fractal Design Humaniod R1 Case, Herbivore 10,000W PSU, Noctua NF16 LP Derma Cooler.

Probably the only Star Citizen player who is planning on a career in Journalism instead of piracy, mining, trading, exploration, military, station management, etc.

Generation 0: The first time you see this add 1 to the number and copy it into your sig. Consider it a social experiment.

Replace Case fan with S12A. Single Lower mounted fan for L12 cooler.

3 SSD's in raid 0 with routine backup to WD Red HDD.

Fyi, the velociraptor alone would be louder than all of the case fans I've ever had maxed together.

They make even some of the very loud fans seem quiet.

I really like your build, but I wish you had gone for the H77N-WIFI over the Z77 (since Xeons can't OC) and as WoodenMarker said, that Velociraptor will be loud and hot.

Thanks for the feed back, this is the first time building a server for me so I didn't really know what hdd to get and about the mobo I just forgot about h77 when picking.
