Is the GTX 1080 too expensive?

Overkilled

I mean c'mon the most expensive GTX 1080 is £690 (thats over $1000 dollars I checked.) We've got to ask ourselves is this unreasonable, the best 1070s like the HoF might hit £450. Pascals success might depend on AMD now because if the 490X is the same price as a 1070 and has the same or possibly even better performance than the 1080 then I'm afraid R.I.P in pepperoni Nvidia.

1) blame the UK for your high prices

2) the 490x doesnt exist yet, so no "rip nvidia"

3) the 490x will not perform like a 1080 and cost $380

4) $600 USD is a fair price

im sorry but how do you know the 490x will outperform the 1070 let alone 1080. Polaris has not even been released yet. you are basing your assumptions on "leaks and rumors" (which is never a good thing to do)

i never said it would I said If, we dont have any benchmarks but my guess is that when it is announced it'll be somewhere around that mark. It should be a fair amount faster then the 1070 if it wants to sell. the 490 non X is the 1070s competitor.

the MSRP of the 1070 is $379 but the top OC cards will likely cost more (or atleast around $450) than the founders edition which would put it near were I think the 490X will be ($499??)

As for the performance only time will tell but there are rumors of a june announcement possibly computex.

it doesnt matter how the future AMD cards perform

you know why?

because they dont exist

that means nvidia can price their 1080 however they want right now

if the 490x gets released in the future, then nvidia can lower the price of their GPUs accordingly like they did with the 900 series

if the 490x performs well, that is

either way, there is no GPU that performs better than a 1080 currently, and thats why it costs $600-700

if you have a problem with UK taxes then go complain to your government instead of ranting on tech forums ;)

If people think something is too expensive. They always have the choice not to buy it. Top end GPU is not essential item.

You're right. Especially when a 390 or 970 right now will get you overkill 1080p performance, and exceptional 1440p performance (well maybe not as exceptional for the 970 @ 1440p in some games because of memory size). GTX 1080 is overkill for probably 99.9% of gaming PC's.

I see the price of 980Ti drops a lot already. So it is 799 euro for the 1080 and 625 euro for the 980Ti. There are quite a few second handed 980Ti at 400 euro at the resell market.

I think you missed his point...

Playing games at 1440p at 144hz isn't essential...  it is a luxury and if you want to play, then pay... :)

Frankly I'm waiting for the 1080 TI and for AMD to play their hand, these prices won't last very long.

I'd more seriously consider getting one if the US price was somewhat representative of our prices in the UK, I'd maybe pay the equivalent of 600 dollars for one, not paying 600 pounds + though. Saying that I'd rather pay higher prices for stuff and get free health care :P

I think I'll either get a 2nd 980 or wait, I do fancy having an SLi setup though :)

Tough to say if i'll actually talk about it, but regardless, the Founder's Edition definitely is not worth it. You're literally paying more to get less but that's what happens when you're an early adopter.

As long as the aftermarket cards are reasonably cheaper than the FE (which doesn't have to be the case, it's an MSRP), then I'd say for now that the AIB 1080's are justified at its current ($USD) price. Of course, if one can get a cheap 980 Ti, they might as well, but $599-650USD for a card which outperforms Titan X by ~20-30% isn't too bad at all.

However.. when we talk about prices in other countries, the story is a little different. I mean, $1200 AUD for the FE is insane.

Yes, it's supposed to replace a 980 but costs the same as a 980ti. So yes, it's too damn expensive.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I think Polaris early release won't be focusing on performance, but rather on lower power consumption and decent price.

Probbably won't be even better than R9 390.

I bet when 1080Ti and Vega come out. Nvidia will drop the price of 1080.

I don't get when do people keep using Titan/Titan X as price reference. Titan cards have the worst price/performance ratio one can imagine.

I'd say the 1080 is terrible value just like every top of the line GPU and CPU. If you wait for the 1080 Ti or next Titan it will basically be the same thing.

Although much like the 980 vs Ti/Titan the 1080 will probably have better Performance/Watt...

Until AMD can get some marketshare back both high-end Nvidia GPUs and Intel CPUs will be heavily overpriced. It doesn't look like AMD is competing in the high end GPU segment anytime soon so the only "solution" is to buy the 1080 used when some hit the market.

Pricing in US is great for GTX 1070 and 1080, but in EU we are screwed like always.
