How do you guys keep your desktop clean?

Danielh90

I just don't have anything on my desktop, apart from stuff I'm working on at the moment. All the apps I need I have them in the task bar, and when I stop using the files on my desktop I move them to my external HDD where I have all my stuff organized.

Those icons you use frequently put on " Pin to start". I only have 3 Icons on my desktop with a decent wallpaper that doesn't hurt eyes at all. feels so clean and peaceful. See Spoiler :P

Often used programs are pinned to the taskbar though that isn't many. Anything else I just search for with the horrid Win10 search function or are programs that are just sort of there for other programs that open when I open a file such as a movie. Outside of 4 stray icons I only have the bin on the desktop.

One folder that is named with a blank character. That is where I keep all my files that I would put on my desktop.

I don't use my desktop for anything, and have icons hidden. If I need something it's in a folder on one of three drives. Programs -> SSD. Games -> RAID array. Miscellaneous crap -> 1 TB HDD. Most used programs, which is really only a handful stay on my taskbar.

The only things that I will put on my desktop are files/folders that I'm currently working with due to ease of access. Frequently used programs I will keep in my taskbar, this totals to about 9 programs. Other programs that I don't use that often but still occasionally use I just hit the Windows/Super/Meta/Whateveryouwanttocallit key on my keyboard to bring up search and will just type the name. I honestly don't know how people have so many desktop shortcuts, it's probably because I like to use my keyboard more than my mouse for navigation. Kind of a habit from running Ubuntu GNOME on my laptop for a while which is very keyboard oriented.

I tried Rocketdock but found its hide function too clumsy to work with Windows with the taskbar. I'll have to try it again but with a different configuration to see if it works better.

EDIT: Nope, still has the same problem. I want it to hide when a Window is open and be able to pop up is I hover over that edge and be visible and not hide when at the desktop or have a Window that isn't full screen.

My desktop has nothing not even the bin on it. I have a Gamdias Hermes keyboard with 5 G keys and use them for shortcuts to my most commonly used programs, the rest are either grouped in the start menu or pinned to the taskbar. For anything else tell Cortana to go get it and open it

Documents in document folder, pictures in pictures, videos in movies... D drive gets messy at times but I use that as a downloads folder and tidy it up every day or so

I have Explorer, Chrome, Mail and Calendar on the taskbar, although I could remove them if I wanted. All app launching is done from search (Win+S), and I have a single folder pinned to quick access with shortcuts to every game. I have all my files/photos in a 200GB Google Drive, synced to a folder on my HDD, with quick access links to each class and to work files. The Drive directory is also synced in the cloud (obviously), on my Surface and is mirrored using DSynchronise to an external RAID1 array in case of a failure at any other point. The RAID backup is a little unnecessary thanks to Google Drive, but gives me peace of mind when working with important data.

Apart from that, I have the Recycle Bin on my desktop since I can't remove it, and I like to use the desktop as a sort of "temp" folder for temporary storage during a project. Otherwise it's empty.

by not actually using my desktop, lol.

Everything I need is either a hotkey or a keyboard shortcut away.

(I'm actually afraid of enabling desktop items right now, since who knows how many monitors worth of icons I've gathered since the last time I cleaned it o_o )

I have roughly 10 icons on my desktop. Only the programs that I sometimes drag files onto to open the file are on the desktop itself (for example photoshop). All my other links are in 1 of 2 rainmeter lists I put on my desktop. They are just 2 big blocks with a bunch of bars in them with the program name written on it and if I click the bar it opens the program. The whole thing is hidden unless I hover my mouse over the blocks. One of the blocks has roughly 50 programs in it and the other one has all my installed games (something like 30 or so).

I'm one of those guys that have zero icons on their desktop. The things I use the most will run at startup anyway, others will go into the start menu as shortcuts.

"How" do I keep it clean? Not sure I understand your question :P I just don't fill it with crap. It's a choice, there is no "how" :)

Taskbar , Start menu , quick launch folders that lead to less used programs.

Rarely used programs I just search on the start menu like once or twice a month for those.

I used to, but since I play old games that are not coded very well for Win 10, when I get out of the game it rearranges my desktop icons.  It gets really annoying to keep arranging them to my liking, so my solution was to just to get rid of all the folders/shortcuts I don't need, so I have less clutter on my desktop.

I'm not new to these forums.  I've been here for a while.  I just made another account because I didn't like the name of my old one.  Anyway, see you around!

If I don't use it weekly, as in every week, I don't keep it on the desktop. Things I use daily I keep on the taskbar. Anything else, especially with W8 or higher, is easily searched and launched in about 2 extra seconds.
