Gtx 960 vs R9 280x

Which one's faster?

280x would be my choice regardless, higher memory bandwidth and more video memory is nice.

The 960 is about equal to the 380 depending on whether the game favours nvidia or AMD. The 380 is a renamed 285. The 285 performs better than a 280, but worse than a 280X, therefore the 280X is faster than the 960.

Irrelevant. The 280X predates AMD's use of compression which means that it needs much more and much faster RAM to perform equivalently.

I used to have both, still have 280X. In short, the 280X is more powerful if slightly older card. However, if the 960 is good enough, it does take a lot less power. I'd go as far as to say make sure your PSU is up to the job of a 280X if you don't have it already.

Depends on the game, but they're basically equivalent. I think at stock the 970 is slightly better, which is why AMD raised the clock speed of the 390.

I'd add that it depends on the 380 and 280x. But @othertomperson is on point

290 = 970?

Depends on the 290 but most get beat by a 970. Only the big boys like the Vapor X and Toxic could beat a 970.

Why does the gpu ranking website says that R9 380's better than the R9 280x?

Because there isn't a 380 or 280x. There are different manufacturers using the same GPU on completely different PCBs. It's not a black and white thing. For the 200 series you want Sapphire, things get more complicated with the 300 series but Sapphire is still awesome.
