How to upgrade to full version

So my hdd died on my msi gaming laptop and I replaced it with a ssd. I installed windows 8.1 enterprise thinking it was gonna recognize that I had windows 8.1 key somewhere in BIOS. But it didn't and I want to get my full version of windows back. How do I get windows 8.1 back? Do I have to buy a new one?

Call Microsoft and tell them what happened, are you upgrading 8.1 or trying to get what you had originally which is what your entitled to.

You have to install the actual version of Windows 8 you had. 

 

You can use a piece of software, I use https://neosmart.net/OemKey/ to grab the key from the BIOS. You can then put that key into the Microsoft ISO site and it will give you the right version to burn to a disc or put on a USB

You cannot use 8.1 Enterprise. I am assuming you had 8 pro or basic. In that case you will need to get the ISO for the one you have and install it.
