1 - Forget about the G5... too much power consuming and loud...

2 - DL380 G6 for iSCSI and CIFS/NFS storage using Nexenta (community edition) or FreeNAS as SAN/NAS

3 - DL165 G7 for virtualization with XenServer, KVM or Proxmox with target iScsi to the DL380 G6.

You can configure 2 Nic with 4x 1Gb port in active-active mode and set the MTU to something like 9000 for better performance on both DL380 G5 and DL165 G7 for the iSCSI link. You may need a dedicated switch at least a Layer 2 managed  to achieve this.....

You can virtualize a pfSense router on the DL165 to get rid of the DL380 G5... :)

I personally use Nexenta (licenced version with 32TB NL-SAS raw with SSD and L2ARC cache/log) as main SAN/NAS at my job and 4 DL160 G6 on XenServer for virtualization. We use a homemade Freenas server as a backup of the Nexenta.

I would just do some Active Directory experiments just because it's pretty cool and useful knowledge for the future. Some virtualization would be fun.

Something kind of interesting I discovered: SoundWire allows you to broadcast your sound over the network to be picked up by a phone app and it will play it with the phone speaker. You can host the server on the network and then access it from your smartphone. You could do a constant playlist, radio feed, etc.

I'm a blogger, student, and developer. I love re-purposing old hardware such as PCs, routers, and phones.
