has anyone used ''intel smart storage'' to set SSD for cache?

LOST TALE

well intel Rapid storage or w,e its called. ( I have win 7 in french btw )

so let me know if its difficult. and how effective it is.. because seeing sshd's benefit from a 8gb ssd... sounds like it oculd be worth it.. to get an SSD for system cache

Do I need to format my Hdd :(?

For Intel SRT you need a Z68 chipset motherboard at minimum as well as an SSD. SSD size are caped at 60GB though you can partition drives to use x size as one disk and x size as the cache for the hard drives.

The fact that you made it to the forum means that you are smart enough to set up a SSD + HDD combo. If that fits into your budget then go for it. I have the SSD for OS and programs and the HDD for games and media. You don't even notice that you have a slower component as mass storage

who cares...

I use it on my laptop. It works well but I am considering going fully SSD

All you need to do is install the Intel SRT software, plugin the SSD (don't do any kind of formatting on it). Use the Intel SRT software to enable the caching through the performance tab. No reformatting of the drive you're going to cache.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

Well I guess I'm making the assumption you already have the SATA mode set to AHCI or RAID (not that you have to have a RAID drive to use that mode as it basically defaults the ports to AHCI if its not a RAID drive), if its IDE then maybe you're hosed.

hosed = scrued?

where do I check that, in the BIOS?

yea, it'll be under sata config / hard drive options / something to do with either sata or hdd. most motherboards default to IDE mode which I believe is likely the case with yours.

Yes, hosed = screwed, as in you'll have to either back up your whole drive to another and then re-install as I have had issues switching from IDE to AHCI and then be able to boot that drive.

Again like @Cryptonite said enter BIOS and most likely go to Advanced Mode, look for the SATA Controller and then look at where it is set, but DO NOT CHANGE IT TO AHCI till you have backed up your data and have the install media to actually attempt a re-install, even if you may not have to. Then and only then, try to see if you can get it to boot on AHCI mode.

If the sata mode is IDE you will have to reformat/reimage, but if it's AHCI/RAID you're fine.

Also I've used SRT before without issue.
