Something strange happened today.  I got out my external hard drive to transfer some files on to a friend's laptop; The files copied, no problems there.  I then went to copy some photos on to his laptop - I backed these up to my external drive over a year ago.  I noticed, before copying, there was no preview of the pictures in explorer, so I clicked on them but it said it couldn't display the image - any of the images.  He said it didn't matter and he had to leave, so I went to safely remove hardware.  It then gave me that message "can't safely remove, the drive is in use".  I know the the safe way around that is to shutdown the computer and then disconnect the external hard drive, which I did.  Now I go and plug the external hard drive into my computer and I turned it on and I got some popup.  I don't remember the exact wording, but I am pretty sure it said something about it not being disconnecting properly.  It gave me an option to run chkdsk or attempt to access the drive...  Well because I don't want to take a chance with my files, I pressed chkdsk.  I pressed both "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".  Here we are 6 hours later and the green bar isn't even 1/4 full; It has processed 32232 files.

I'm a bit paranoid right now because I cannot access the drive and disk management shows no file system and 100% free space.  Before all this happened the drive had about 261gb space left.

Download CrystalDiskInfo, run it, and post a screenshot of the raw values of that drive for me to look at.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

It took me like an hour+ on my SSD, at 500 MB/s. Scale that up according to your HDDs speed to get a rough estimate.

HDD access time is so much slower than an HDD. Its just normal.

I think you meant to say "slower than an SSD"?

I'm sorry I always have the urge to point out people's mistakes

I use CrystalDiskInfo all the time to check SMART.  Great program.

edit * Just noticed chkdsk started picking up in speed.  It's now going very fast and into the millions of clusters processed.  Lets see what happens.

Here is what you asked for

Your HDD looks fine from that program, so it shouldn't be an issue with hardware. It's probably just something software-related.

Yeah I didn't notice anything off.  Thanks for confirming.

chkdsk is about 65% complete now.  I'll update the thread when it's done.

All is good.  Took nearly 8 hours, but now my mind is at ease.  Thanks to everyone for the replies.  Also those pictures that I said didn't preview on the laptop seem to be work now.  So I am not sure what the problem was.  Maybe Windows 10..?

Maybe it was one of those "did you try restarting it?" problems :P
