Custom cooled GTX 1080 spotted

So this would be the first ''non founders edition'' GTX 1080 to be spotted in the wild...it's from Galax and it's meant to be a very affordable design, even cheaper than the ''reference card''

It use a plastic shroud with a blower style fan design and no backplate, all this in order to bring the cost down as low as possible.

Wow that looks ugly.

Not sure why they would make that.... Pretty sure someone paying around 600 for a GPU doesn't want a GPU that looks like THAT...

It's also probably a lot louder.

I don't think it looks that bad. Back plate would be really nice but it's not glossy or tacky, just plain. That would work for people with no window or who just want performance.

BUT...but but but...what if this one is really 599$? and the ''founders edition'' are 699$...and the Asus strix, MSI gaming, gigabyte windforce are let's say 729$ and up...would you consider this card then? remember...it's all black so it will look nice in any system and the GTX 1080 is only 180W TDP...so this cooler might very well be ''enough''...not saying it's the best thing in the world...but it should be for sure one of the more affordable design!

True, but I'd imagine that some more mainstream cards with aftermarket coolers would be around 600 ish.

 

If it's priced below 600, it might make a little sense, but personally I don't see THAT much of a point in this card.

The aftermarket cards will be $600. Jen-Hsun said the founders was the $700 one.

i think it's gonna be hard for the board partners to create a new design from scratch that will AT LEAST meat the minimum quality and specifications of the ''reference'' or ''founders edition'' cards without having to ask more than what nvidia is asking...remember they have to invest in research and development and marketing as well and they generally tend to use higher quality parts (better fans, fancy led lighting, nicely designed backplates etc.) ...i think, this is one of the card that will go for ''close to 599$''...but i don't think many others will.

Well, technically they don't need to... You can use the reference pcb layout and just stick an aftermarket cooler on the card.

Seriously given how one of the only practical uses of this blower cards nowadays is to be stucked inside a tiny, windowless ITX rig...not seeing the issue.

It's good for water coolers (like myself) who would wind up taking that hideous thing apart anyways. Just buy this reference cheaper than nVidia's reference design and save some dough.

if you show off at events dont get it, if you have your pc on your desk or floor and never look at it, cheaper is better

and so do i...but there are people who would be interested in paying as low as possible for a card, rip the cooler off and pop on an EK waterblock on it or something...

I'd buy it my computer is a define r4 no window and I would rather have it run cooler then blowing heat all over the place
