Game "freezing" (running but 0 fps) / randomly accesing dvd drive

Hello,

I am currently at a loss. I have recently purchased all my pc components and have build my pc with them yesterday. (List of components (It also contains the NZXT hue+ & fan grid+ v2))

I tried a couple of games on it and at first, I was thrilled with the improvement over my 5 year old system, however things went wrong quickly.

>Note, I started with windows 7 professional and upgraded. (more on that below.)

Problem with gaming:

Spoiler

Windows 7:

Mirrors Edge (Origin):

When I booted up mirrors edge, it decided to only show 1 frame and call it quits, not rendering any new frames. I heard the sound of the game starting, going through its logo's, but it didn't update the frame. When I tabbed out and back in, I confirmed that the game was still running, as it drew another image of the menu screen. I looked only to see if anyone else had issues with this and found that I had to disable physx. Now for some reason, my config screen from nvidia doesn't allow me to turn off physx, which is a mystery on its own. So, I went through the painfully slow process of navigating the menu, whilst using the alt-tab trick I learned myself, and turned of physx. I restarted the game and it still didn't work. I decided to lay down mirrors edge there.

Endless Legend (Steam):

When I tried to boot up Endless legend after Mirrors Edge, I got the exact same result as mirrors edge, only this time the alt-tabbing did not seem to work.

>When I reseated my gpu, it suddenly worked?

CsGo (Steam):

Once more, I started up csgo and I got the same thing as with Mirrors Edge. It ran, but did not give me any updates to the rendered frames. For this game, the alt-tabbing was functional.

Battlefield 4 (Origin) / Elite Dangerous Horizons (Steam) / Warthunder / League of Legends / Payday 2 (Steam):

These games appear to be running fine. I have not managed to find any problems with them, in the timespan I played/left them running.

Tomb Raider:

The game I initially tried for its benchmark. It ran fine at its highest settings, 1080p.

> I tried anything I could think of to fix them. Reinstalling/Updating drivers, fresh installations of the games, nothing seemed to help. And so came my update to windows 10.

Windows 10:

Mirrors Edge:

Same problem as before.

Endless Legend:

Same problem as before, however this time I can' t get it to work even with reseating my gpu.

CsGo:

Same problem as before.

Battlefield 4 (Origin) / Elite Dangerous Horizons (Steam) / Warthunder / League of Legends / Payday 2 (Steam):

These games appear to be running fine. I have not managed to find any problems with them, in the time-span I played/left them running.

Tomb Raider:

The game I initially tried for its benchmark. It ran fine at its highest settings, 1080p.

Please do note that I did not experience any artifacting during any of these games. Even the games that play at "0 fps".

> I just did some more testing / benchmarking and it seems that any game that does run instantly

and keeps it maxed out, unless I tab out of the game!

> I will link some pictures as soon as I have them uploaded.

As for drivers that I currently have installed:

-Gigabyte Oc Guru v2.00

-Cam (for both NZXT Hue+ & NZXT fan grid+ V2)

-Whatever latest version of my mobo bios was able to find for itself on the internet

-GeForce Game Ready Driver version: 355.82 (came with the disk that belongs to my gpu. And updating to version: 365.10 did not fix the issues!)

- Corsair Control panel (For my H2100 Headset)

9May 12:03 Edit: I have not touched any of the oc settings yet.

9May 12:12 Edit: Imgur link to system/Cam controller check on cpu/gpu

9May 13:04 Edit: I have tried to play these games with and without the optional 6-pin on the side of my card, and this did not seem to make a difference.

Problem with the cd/dvd-drive

Spoiler

Now as for the problem with my cd/dvd-drive:

It seems that my motherboard is trying to read out my cd/dvd-drive every so often. The intervals at which it does this seem to random enough for me to not see a pattern emerging. It does come with an audible beep from my motherboard, and some ticking when it tries to read the dvd drive, although I' m not sure of the latter part.

6 timings I recorded at random in succesion:

m:ss  0:00 > 0:42 > 1:02 > 1:48 > 2:15 > 3:06

With 0:00 starting at a beep and 3:06 ending at one.

This problem isn't that urgent as I can just temporarily remove the sata cable connecting the 2 when I don't need the drive.

> I could not find any information about audio cues in my manuals.

If anyone has had similar issues, please let me know so we can maybe figure it out together.

Greetings from the Netherlands (EU)

Have you thought about reinstalling Windows? Clean install may do the trick if some wierd corruption has happened in the background.

By far some wierd problems, Normally blame it on a bad driver, But with it working fine on some games and not others..

Wouldn't updating my system from win 7 to win 10 solve any issues that may or may not have been present in win 7?

>A link to my system (sorry that it is in dutch, it is just the language I speak :p)

Not really still has use some of the drivers/software that was already on the windows 7.

I find its always better to just fresh install, Even more so with a new system least then you know that everything is fresh no old registry keys or files pissing it off :)

Not really still has use some of the drivers/software that was already on the windows 7.

I made an attempt at reïnstalling windows from my original copy and it didn't fix it.

I then purchased another windows 10 license and that seemed to work. From there I installed my drivers one-by-one and found the (presumed) culprite. The cam software from NZXT contains an in-game overlay. When I installed the Cam software, the same games started having issues. I then did a little bit of research on the cam software in specific and found another person that had issues with it. Disabling the in-game overlay seems to have done the trick though. No more weird gpu locking and 0fps.

That only leaves the cd/dvd-drive acting weird, which I'm going to try and change tomorrow with one from my old desktop that didn't do this.

Dam didnt even notice you had CAM installed, other wise would of advised to disable it xD But least you have it working now. :)

And the CD drive couldnt even guess why it was doing what you have advised, clearly has a mind of its own
