Hey Guys,

I'm building a budget build for my father-in-law that will be used for normal web browsing/ms office use, with a little gaming mixed in, mostly older Crysis games, Battlefield 4 etc etc.

I've shortlisted the two CPUs for the budget, and was wondering what you guys thought about these choices? The Pentium is a great overclocker, but I think that for gaming, the games could benefit from the extra cores that the i3 provides. Second opinion anyone?

Thanks!

/Oskar

i3 is upwards of 40% better. Basically, the Dual-core nature of the Pentium makes it utter trash for anything like BF4 which uses more than 8 threads

You may be able to overclock the Pentium, but since most games since about 2006-2008 use 4 or more threads, and indeed most programs, I'd recommend the i3 4130 (also, it kicks the crap out of the Pentium in gaming).

If you can go with a i3 and paired it with a good gpu ie like 950~960 then go for it.

i3 will give you more horse power in theory.

Crysis and bf4 etc are pretty serious  titles, get the i3 for the hyperthreading (or even a low end i5 if you can fit it in your budget).

I would agree on crysis but on BF4 Pentium can run it pretty damn well.

Not as well as a multi-core CPU tho (FX 6300 or i3 4170 just to name a few)

Compare CPU-intensive games, not 2D indie games which barely stress the CPU

Nope not my point here some people keep bringing down the g3258 i need to show some of the people that people like playing moba game could still play on a budget pc.

And people who want longevity should avoid it as modern games don't even boot on it

Well Im gonna stand up for the G3258, I personally play games like Battlefield 4, Arma 3, etc. (CPU Intensive Games) and I play them at max settings 60fps steady with a moderate overclock of 4.4Ghz (on stock cooler). So I would choose the G3258, saving some money than later down the line upgrading to an i5.

My Set-up

CPU: G3258 @4.4Ghz (have obtained 4.8Ghz but stock cooler, it got to hot)

GPU: EVGA GTX 750Ti

An overclocked Pentium (both the Pentium and i3 are essentially the same dual core silicone) has more theoretical compute than the locked i3, however, getting a thread to utilize every part of a core is no easy feat, even more so on PC. Thus, despite reporting 100% utilization, parts of the core may be starved for something to do.

Hyperthreading basically crams in a second task per core to utilize unused resources from the other thread (neither thread gets priority), and more importantly, allows the i3 to take on the additional threads with minimal penalty.

In short, the i3 is the superior choice overall compared to the Pentium.

My eyes see the past…
