Heya guys, have some questions about the new HTC VIVE. Mainly, how do I use it off of steam for things like non steam VR indie games, or like star citizen? Or even just to use it on steam games that are not VR optimized? I have seen some people able to run things like battlefield (I know that is not steam, but close enough)

All I had to do was run SteamVR and then run my game.

Yes but that doesnt run the game in vr, it just acts like there is a large monitor in them, rather than making the game in vr where turning your head turns your head in game

It's using a program called Vorpx or any other stereoscopic injector. I don't think that Vorpx supports the vive yet though. Those games aren't designed for VR and I wouldn't recommend you play bf4 with it just yet. I got pretty motion sick with windlands pretty much immediately. It's not a nice feeling. Get your VR legs first.

Oh sorry I missed the bit where you were trying to run non VR games on a VR headset, I thought you meant games that supported it but weren't on steam. In that case something like VorpX will do the job but honestly its a not a massively good idea a lot of the experiences are extremely sub par.
