Hey all,

For my upcoming build I've been doing quite a lot of research on motherboards since I've heard cheaping out on a MoBo isn't the greatest of ideas. I'm leaning towards an Asus board because they seem to be the most reliably high quality motherboard manufacturer (among other things). I got interested in the Maximus VIII Hero board (Z170 chipset for an i7-6700K). I plan on doing some overclocking (don't know how much yet), and it seems to have plenty or features, and enough fan headers for my 6, possibly 7 fans (water pump included). After diving into some reviews however, my view of the board has changed a little. A fair amount report DOAs, and boards that die after 3-5 months of use.

I assume that this kind of thing would occur to a certain degree with any piece of technology that has been shipped, but:

Is it something I should be specifically worried about with this board? Are there other boards that offer similar features that you would recommend over this board? Or am I being way too paranoid and I should order the board because its great?

Thanks

The Asus Z170-A is an amazing board. It's big brother the deluxe model is quite astonoshing, but the Z170-A is not lacking very much in comparison. Great overclocking, and great expansion possibilities. A much better board than the hero IMO.

A friend brought up a great point, saying a mobo is a mobo and people really only bother to post a review if its bad, and don't think about it to post a good one

To a certain extend yes. But what you really want to look out for is customer reviews. A lot more "what you want to know" a lot less "this is my opinion eat it".

true true. on a completely opposite note, do you like your 5820K? i'm kinda torn between the two processors

Get it. It's a abseloutly brilliant CPU. Example: I got a 280x, and i want to stream LoL. With the highest settings on OBS and a bit of tweaking with Bitrate and i got a solid 200fps while streaming 720p 60fps. Some loss due to encoding, but otherwise it was smooth af.

On top of that it's a great overclocker, and will actually beat out a ceratain 24 threaded xeon(can't remember its name) when it's oc'd(around 4.5) in Cinebench

I stream also, thats what this build is for (as well as gaming of course). Will it to 1080P at 60 fps? i definintely hope it could to 720 at 60 or 1080 at 30. Second question: Asus X99-A vs Asrock Fatal1ty X99X Killer. same price. are you partial to the asrock board or does it really even matter? (does it have enough fan headers?) sorry for so many questions :P

It's ok ;)

I got the X99X killer on the cheap by buying a demo sample. I haven't oc'd with it yet, but other people say it's a great performer. I really like the X99-A's looks as well as its performance.

Their close to eachother in all ways, so it's more a matter of what look you like the most :)

I shall compare :P how many fan headers does it have? convenient locations?
