HTC is reportedly building two new Nexus devices

HTC-logo.png

It seems like HTC is going to be Google's chosen manufacturer this year according to some small leaks; an Interesting and pleasant choice nonetheless, I'm curious as to how they will fare.

Evan Blass, aka @evleaks, has just revealed that HTC is working on two Android N-running devices, model numbers S1 and M1, in cooperation with Google. The strong implication there? These are Nexus devices, probably both handsets.

We can corroborate that this story is likely accurate,  we rate this rumor an 8 out of 10 confidence level, and that HTC's internal model numbers are probably based upon the codenames Google currently plans to use for the devices: Marlin and Sailfish. Google has a long history of naming Nexus devices after aquatic life, the current 5X and 6P are Bullhead and Angler, respectively. The Nexus 6 was Shamu. The Nexus 5 was Hammerhead, and so on. Our direct evidence for both of these names is not something we feel comfortable sharing - it wouldn't be any more convincing to you, either, but suffice it to say we trust the source. And we also have no idea how these phones actually... look. However, we do have one reference to Marlin in the AOSP Gerrit (a code review tool), just about a month ago, on March 30th. The person referencing Marlin is a senior Qualcomm engineer, and Qualcomm works directly with all of its device partners during the development process.

Spoiler

Unfortunately, that's all we have to share for now. There's just not much to go on yet. All things considered - our source, the AOSP Gerrit reference, and evleaks' tweet - two Nexus phones is looking more and more like a safe bet. Exactly when and where we'll see them - and exactly what we'll see - remains unknown. So, get on the #nexushypetrain everyone - Nexus season has begun.

Good, HTC can make decent phones they just need guidance so we don't get another iPhone clone.

And by guidance you mean not buying their product to the extent their company almost went bankrupt?

Thank god.  I need to replace this HTC One M8, and I actually really like Nexus or HTC devices, preferably.  I can't go to Apple, because I love the  Android ecosystem, so hopefully it'll be a good priced little monster.

I hope they can also guide Google away from the horrendous visor.

The problem is that this is an nVidia product and scoring any nVidia product a "zero" is also highly predictive of the number of nVidia products the reviewer will receive for review in the future.

Lenovo? Not sure. Android isn't their strongest suit yet.

ASUS? There are ASUS Nexus products (Nexus 7).

Sony has never got the chance yet.

Removable battery PLEASE.

I want a phone that lasts

Without having to plug into something

Or running out of battery cycles

It won't happen. Consider the following, current battery's are designed to fail after 2 or 3 years and are non replaceable on purpose. Why? Because its in the phone manufacturers interest to have a product which commits suicide after a certain period forcing the user into having to go out and buy another phone.

I'd wager dead phone batteries drive more sales of product than any marketing campaign ever does.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

Non-replaceable is not really non-replaceable. You can replace it and it is not that hard either on many phones. It is just not as practical as just swapping out the battery and putting in a charged one in seconds...

I'd say its more of silly iphone bandwagon and thin phone fetish that is the reason.

That said, if no one makes something better with removable battery I'll just get a V10 or another G4 and a stockpile of zerolemon batteries.

I advise the V10 to everyone considering it, specially if you can get for as low as 429€, best device ever made!!! loving mine hardcore

Only problem with it is that it might be a tad too big for some people.

It's ever so slightly bigger than the Nexus 6P.
