Sounds like you need to install some drivers. Try another usb port for your mouse. If you have it in a USB 3.0 port, it may not recognize it until you install the driver for USB control. Try to located a USB 2.0 port for your mouse. I had the same issue on my computer and it would not recognize my mouse until I switched to a USB 2.0 port. Same deal with your screen- you probably need to install some drivers.

A guy builds a house on bedrock. It's sturdy and stands wind and the neighbors are great. Everything's great and he loves his new house. It's just that he'd rather live on the beach. So he uproots his whole house and has it moved to the beach. He sets it down but right away it sinks in the sand. Turns out, you can't just up and move a house from one terrain to another without completely re-doing the foundation.

Just re-install the Windows and you'll be fine. Even if you got the second-hand OS working with registry edits and driver hacks, it's not going to be as fast and as stable as it could be.
