Was wondering If I should mod a 3.2Ghz Xeon Quad Core to my lga 775 motherboard

or use a Q9660?

Only worrying about doing damage while cutting motherboard.

Also wondering which one would win in terms of performance.

They will have the same roughly the same performance, and if you have any worries about cutting the cpu socket, and destroying the board, just go for the q9650. Make sure your bios supports the c2q though if you are upgrading.

I honestly wouldn't. Motherboards can die very VERY quickly.

Also, if the CPU is not compatible within the socket.... then its not compatible.

You can short out your board in seconds.

Not with the 771 to 775 mod. I'm currently running a Xeon X5450 in an EVGA nforce 680i. Also, the cuts you need to make are very small and don't really affect the motherboard in any way if done carefully.

'running' I'd lean more to 'it boots and probably is okay' xD

Nonsense. Mod the board from 771>>775 and use the Xeon with the tape strip to block the pins. The mod is painless, the microcode updates to the BIOS work very well to add the Xeon's to the supported CPUs and a high GHz Xeon is a CHEAPER AND BETTER chip that overclocks more reliably to 4-4.2GHz.

If for some reason you REALLY don't want to mod the socket (it's an easy mod that does no real harm to the socket), you can always mod the chip and cut out the divots so it will align properly in an unmodded board. It's just more difficult to do and more exacting an operation, that's all. It's far easier to screw up than modding the board.

If you do mod the board, just be sure to update the BIOS with a working CPU (E8500 you probably have in there anyways) FIRST and then make the cut to the plastic when that old CPU is still in the socket. That will protect the pins from being damaged during the cuts. Don't mod the socket with a CPU not in there.

Follow this and you are good to go:
