Yes, thats the point of a contract, you have to pay all remaining months, and possibly an early termination charge

Same goes for all contract providers

You will, at the very least, have to pay any bills left outstanding if you're not out of your initial contract agreement. So, if you pay £20 a month and have 6 months left on your contract, you will have to pay at least £120 if you cancel early. There is likely an early termination fee as well if you're doing this, but that's something to call your network and ask them about, not us. 

If you're out of contract (the one you're legally bound to) and you just want to stop paying monthly for your phone usage, there's no charge for that. You normally have to give a month's notice, though, so you'd be paying another month's bill.
