1440p will make my GPUs too hot??

So to make a long story short, I've got my eyes on a 1440p G-Sync monitor, and I'm completely sold on it, but it occurred to me I may have an issue with upping the resolution to 1440 from 1080.

 

I'm running dual MSI Twin Frozr 780s in 2-Way SLI, (Stock speeds) and using EVGA Precision X for a fan curve. I've been on 1080p since I got into PC gaming, and I also have a 2nd 1080p monitor for non-gaming things as well.

 

The issue: My 780s will start to throttle at 80c degrees. At 1080p in a few games I have, they get close to this temp, even with 100% fan speed from my fan curve in games like GTA 5, Battlefield, etc. 

 

And in Witcher 3, it does reach 80c, and I start to notice the throttling.

 

I'm worried that at 1440p, my cards will perform even worse, not only because it's a higher resolution, but also because of throttling due to them working harder and getting more heat. And with newer game titles releasing, they're not gonna get any cooler.

 

So I guess what I'm asking is; is there a solution to this? Besides getting new cards altogether, hopefully someone has an answer. My cards have as much airflow as they possibly can. I have the Cooler Master Storm Stryker case, which is essentially one giant vent. I have no idea what I should do. Any suggestions???

well, throttling doesnt "decrease" speed in the way you're thinking. its more so a "cap" where the card will start to get too hot and tone back, when if your game reaches that level of gpu usage they simply stop providing extra performance after that "cap".

 

as stated before me adjusting your fan curves may help, both those of your gpu and your case fans.

 

as for performance differences on higher resolutions, it seems to be very game-dependant and even setting-dependant.

Well, if they work at 100% they work at 100%, probably not getting hotter aslong as you dont apply some stupid synthetic load on them. If the cards get to 80 even on stock speeds maybe try to improve the airflow of your case, 2 780s put out alot of heat and will run hotter if they have to recycle alot of air.

So, should I not take throttling as seriously then? Safe to go 1440p?

Also, I'm not sure what else I can do to improve airflow. Cable management is near flawless. Nothing obstructing airflow.

You can try replacing fans with better ones. Other than that and the fan curve, perhaps you should replace the thermal paste. That's really everything I can tell you lol

My MSI 970 reaches 81c all the time it does not throttle and it is only on very demanding stuff! :D

wow...i had the GTX 780 twinfrozr gaming from MSI an i,ve never seen it reach even 75c in games...that with a full blown overclock to 1225mhz...and only around 55% fanspeed...SLI really is a big impact on GPU temps....

But you know...if you're cards are already working 98% GPU loads on 1080p they won't really get any hotter than that even at 1440p...

can you add more fans to your case? i've noticed a HUGE temp drop after i added a 120mm fan at the floor of my case pushing air upward straight into my GPU.

I'm terrified to take apart my GPU. I hate even opening my case for anything, let alone taking apart an individual component. But I may have to learn how..

Well I'm kinda on my way there. I originally had 5 cooler master sickleflows, but replaced 2 of them on the front of my case with a pair of corsair airflow SF120s. Still got 3 more to replace, but not sure if it'd be a huge help.

I don't think I can stuff anymore in my case. I have 5 case fans currently. 3 CM sickleflows and 2 Corsair Airflow quiet edition SF120s on the front of my case.

87 degrees is the cap for the Titan X, the fans will just spin faster to keep the card at that. They are NOT throttling unless you see a noticeable FPS dip.

I've tested with MSI Afterburner's overlay. When the 780 reaches 80c, it throttles. I know for a fact it is.

The 780 isn't the same as a 970. 2 different series cards. I've tested with Afterburner's overlay to confirm it is throttling a bit as soon as it touches 78-80c

Temps will rise with higher Resolutions. How much is depending on your Cooling, which sound like is very bad. Post a Picture with your sidepanel off.
