Posted April 8, 2016 Hello all, I'm thinking of upgrading my system's CPU and Motherboard, which I won't be doing again for a long time. That being said, my use case is fairly common: Mostly gaming (from low to high intensive games), web surfing, some programming, photo editing, might get into some video editing later on after this semester. Going through the forums, most people and benchmarks show similar performance between the 5820k and 6700k up to quad core usage, but with the 5820k pulling out above 4 cores (6). It seems that the Z170 Chipset is new and modern with having powerful but efficient CPUs. While LGA2011-v3 is quite a bit older, its conidered to still being more future proof in comparison to LGA-1151, from what I've read. DirectX12 is supposed to utalize more cores so, 5820k in theory should have better performance in the long run, no? Aesthetic is also important, but most X99 and Z170 Chipset boards are visually appealing anyways. These are two sample builds I put together: Z170: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/8Z4M99 X99: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/zLBQ8d Still paying about $100 more for 2011-v3 route. I don't mind paying a lot once for things that will last and perform well for a long time. What do you guys think? I may have overdragged this topic. DX12 uses cores more efficiently, which means the less cores you have, the bigger jump in performance you will see. QUOTE ME IN A REPLY SO I CAN SEE THE NOTIFICATION! I fail to see how a small IPC increase from Haswell to Skylake beats having 2 more cores and 4 more threads in rendering, of all things. QUOTE ME IN A REPLY SO I CAN SEE THE NOTIFICATION! Posted April 8, 2016 Here you go! But you will most likely benefit more from Z170 in my experience. Otherwise 6700K is the better option. Mein Führer... I CAN WALK !! Aside from the extra cores it's just all the features the motherboard gives you, like 28 PCI-e lanes at base. not that most people will ever actually use them. Also Broadwell EP was finally announced, so that has the 5% performance gain from haswell as well. I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...
