This is sufficient for 1080p at 60Hz.
To output 1080p at 120Hz or 144Hz, you need a dual link DVI-D or DisplayPort cable and connect those to your monitor and computer. These standards include support for higher resolutions and refresh rates. HDMI 1.3 or higher can also be used to output 1080p content at144Hz

(Google info)

This means that ether you do not have DVI-D dual link so that caps you to 60 fps and the hdmi is 1.2 which does also limit to 60Hz

50 (english) pounds for a dvi-d cable? mine was 4 euro's for 1.5 meter and working fine for 144hz. are you sure you did plug in in the dvi-d output of your graphics card? or did you plug it in maybe on the dvi-i port?

r9 290 only has dvi-d

im not new to computers, i know what im talking about when i say i have a dvi-d cable.

You sure? If you bought the DVI-D dual link cable off ebay then I'm sorry to say, go buy another cable that's not off ebay...I've gotten 4 dual link cables off ebay when I lost my original cable for my 120hz monitor...they all had the pins making us think it's a dual link cable but the wiring inside is only connected for single link so...I bought mine off amazon, been flawless :D

edit: nvm, just saw your post on how you spent 50 quid on a dual link cable...

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...
