msi laptop with 970 or 960

So i was wondering if it was worth an extra $500aud to upgrade from a gtx960m 2gb to a 970m 3gb. I'm using it for uni. Mainly for programming and other school stuff (assignments, research, rendering images, photoshop etc.) As well as playing games during my spare time.

They pretty much have the same specs except for the keyboards and gpu. The ge62 is the 970m and the gp62 is 960m.

Hello there,

 

First off, I just don't want to say that you should pick X or Y, because that's a decision only you can make. Thus I only want to give you the facts regarding the main difference: the GTX 960M and the GTX 970M.

 

According to gpu.userbenchmark.com the difference between them, and correct me if I am wrong, is about +100% to the GTX 970M¹. This basically means that the 970M is roughly twice as fast, twice the fps etc. As most games are using the desktop videocards, I attempted to compare the 970M with the desktop variant of the 960. This is again done through the use of gpu.userbenchmark.com. Do mind that they are not really comparable due to various of reasons. One of them is that this comparison does not take the temperature in comparison, which is likely to affect the laptop system. When they are compared, the difference according to the formerly mentioned website is ~5-10% in favour of the desktop 960².

 

To further complete this comparison, I also compared the GTX 960M to the desktop version of the GTX 950. I was honestly surprised when I saw that the GTX 950 was roughly 70~75% better, again according to the source, when it was compared to the 960M³.

 

The only other difference between these two laptops is the keyboard. Both have a lit keyboard, which is nice to have. So if you want colours on top of that, is up to you to decide.

 

Hopefully with this small but (I think) conclusive analysis, you can decide for yourself which laptop to choose. Whether the laptop is worth that 500 AUD more for the performance increase or not.
