GTX 970 or 380x ?

Gonna upgrade my stone age 6970 card since its the major bottle neck in my system, and im wondering if the extra 50 bucks is worth it for the gtx 970 instead of 380x 

 

Cpu i5 4690k 

Ram 20gb Kingston Hyper X cl 10 1600 mhz 

Mb Asus H97 Plus

First off, you need a Z97 mobo to be able to OC your cpu.

 

And if the gpu is worth the extra money or not, that is up to you. Check some benchmarks and then decide if those couple of fps is worth it to you. And if you decide to go with the 970, I'd suggest getting the 390 because it's just better for the same price

the GTX 970 and R9 390 trade blows, but I personally prefer the 970 because m experience with NVidia has been more stable. 

 

both are good cards, but I would not say that one is better than the other.

R9 390 is better value

The 970 and the 380x are in two different price points. The 970 and the R9 390 are more closely comparable. The 390 performs better than the 970 but costs more. But since you're choosing between the 380 and the 970, would go for 970. But... if you have the budget, I would suggest the 390 and if not, the 970 is a great choice.

I would get the 970/R9 390 since the speed boost that you get is significant. Whether you get the R9 390 or the 970 will depend on what games you play and at what resolution, I would recommend look at benchmarks yourself to make the decision.

Thanks for the reply guys, i found another used 6970 for 40 Bucks so i just went and picked it up and gonna wait for the new Gpus to arrive before i do a proper "investment" in a new card ;P

Unless you're doing 93+ command tasks, the Maxwell is going to far outperform the Fiji. In those cases though, the Fiji has marginally better performance than the Maxwell. Instances of async command tasks exceeding 93+ is purely theoretical at this time. I'm talking about async compute for gaming, like in AOTS, where a 380 was beating a GTX 970.

Do you have a link to their data? I've checked a lot of benchmarking data and generally the comparison between the 390x and GTX 980 is within S. Also, I remember seeing a recent GTX 970 vs 390 and there was a decent fps difference between the two, however it was on the Hitman Beta.

There have been articles, but googling it just turns up information on async shaders themselves

That article isn't the specific one I was looking for, just Fury X vs 980ti, the one I've seen showed many GPU's, where you can see how much of an impact a-sync compute has with lower-end GPU's, like a 270x beating a 960.

Ah, Ashes of the Singularity is getting pretty wildly different results among bench-marking groups. For instance, this article shows far narrower fps margins between the 390X and GTX 980. I think the results you cited say more about the performance gap between the 390x and Fury X being greater than the 980 and 980ti than anything else.

Which article?

Also, the tomshardware one shows the 390x and Fury X within ~6FPS of each other at 4k, and the 980/980ti being ~11-12 FPS away.

Also, I feel like it should be pointed out that talking about asynch compute when the GTX 10xx line announcement is right around the corner is a bit futile. I mean, the 900 series is almost 2 years old now and we're comparing it to the R9 series, which has been out 9 months.

Everyone is posting this guy, yet other benchmarks show the 390 doing way better than this, and it consistently beating the 970 at 1080p. Post JayZTwoCents or a TPU review.

Yeah all is relative to the experience. I've been shat on by both NVIDIA and AMD, so I honestly don't care who I get at this point.

380x is like a 965(if it exists) 970 is better and has equal(I know .5 gb is slower) vram and more powerful core(proccesor)

At what resolution are you gaming? For 1080p, the 380x would probably be all you need. 390 / 970 are more targeted at 1440p.

you dont need Z97 to oc your Cpu running it at 4,5 1,3v np with H97 Plus, asus fixed it a while back

I would say get an EVGA 970 FTW that is going for $350 and likely a triple A title included too. It's a guaranteed work with intel and all together stable but just note the 380 is basically a different pricing category
