if you meant m.2 vs sata SSD then

 

on an average situation

M.2 = faster, smaller, doesnt need cables

Sata = cheaper

 

for average consumer, i would still recommend going with sata... m.2 is still finicky to setup on some motherboards

not to mention its cheaper

the speed doesnt really matter unless you like 1 second faster boot time, a sata SSD is fast enough

Or perhaps is it better than pcie? No, they're pretty much the same so long as the m.2 ssd you get actually can make use of the bandwidth.

I haven't noticed the difference between my samsung 950 m.2 and my 850 ssd. Tbh my m.2 has been pretty unstable though.

M.2 is just the form factor.

M.2 can run via sATA or PCIe.

PCIe SSDs are generally faster than sATA SSDs.

If they are both using the sata interface you will see little difference as SSDs have have already pushed that interface to the max so you wont see any gain. If you are using a PCI interface you can see a substantial gain

In this case yes, but they make m.2 wifi cards and such also.

M.2 SATA = SSD SATA

M.2 PCIe > SSD SATA

M.2 SATA < SSD NVMe U.2

M.2 PCIe = SSD NVMe U.2

M.2 is just the interface and not the SSD itself. M.2 on some board can be set as PCIe or SATA. A M.2 PCIe mode SSD will be faster than a normal SSD. But a M.2 SATA mode SSD will be the same as a regular SSD.
