Most AMAs are marketing stunts (if not all). However the person creating the thread doesn't work for AMD - merely a moderator on that subreddit. So there's bound to be some slip-ups. Besides, did anyone really expect to get specific product information on unreleased products? That would be a bit naive.

Unfortunately, what I am seeing seems to be that we won't be able to glean as much info about Polaris and the furyx2 as we hoped... We won't get any info about the furyx2 and will only get some small details about Polaris. It seems we won't know much about Polaris for at least 2 months or so. The only stuff I've found is that:

• Polaris is 14nm exclusive
• Polaris will use DP 1.3
• Polaris support h.265 decode up to 4k

Honestly, that's not a lot of info, and most of it we already knew or could infer.

We might get some more info about other stuff like VR and stuff though, though even then not too much.

can someone ask how big the die will be and what is the TDP for the flagship?

Will we see Fury performance at 100W or are we going to see 2.5x faster than Fury at 275W?

The 2.5x perf/w is misleading at the very least.

We want big-die monster chips!!!

 

What are the prognoses on the next die shrink? Can we achieve 16k per eye @ 144Hz by 2020?

I can concede that is what might have actually happened, however, the Titan X and 980Ti were already released when that statement was made. So they already knew it would barely match the 980Ti, when that statement was made.

If I remember correctly, that statement was made by someone in charge of cooling during a cooling related discussion. In that context, it makes perfect sense. It's also very likely that the people in charge of cooling design do not know the performance of the chip until release, only the power output to design the cooling around.

 

Basically, it was a statement during a discussion about cooling that has been taken WAAAAYYYYY out of context.

 

But whatever, what's been said has been said, and can't be changed now. Maybe the internet should take some time to understand situations before shouting about everything.

But the statement had to have been prepared at the least days/weeks in advance. I believe it was originally supposed to slide between the 980 and Titan X, and the 980ti surprise launch (well relatively speaking) right before the supposed original Fury X launch really might have messed shit up internally.

 

After all remember how hard is was to get ANY Fury X cards at launch? This makes me think this sort of timeline

 

Mid March:

• Titan X launches.
• 390x (Fiji X) rumors still indicate 8GB variants
• AMD it totes ok cause it's a stupid high cost high bar to compete with *speculation*

Mid April:

• a leak begins to swirl about the 980ti launch (quite literally out of the blue)
• Fiji X leaks indicate pricing around 800-900 dollars (and 4GB of HBM)
• AMD gets worried and as time goes on likely begins upclocking Fiji products *speculation*

Mid May:

• The 980ti seems like a certainty, 650-700 USD pricing effectively confirmed
• Fiji X begins swirling as "Fury", pricing rumors drop from mid 800s to 700-750 or so
• AMD makes comments about overclockers dream card (likely from before they knew internally exactly how good the 980ti was going to be)

June:

• 980ti launches, Fury X now has to effectively compete directly with a Titan X with aftermarket availability
• AMD MUST push Fiji to the limit to compete (kinda) *speculation*, leading to low yields and shortages of products/review samples at launch
• AMD also has to launch Fiji at 650 dollars as well, hitting their profit on the card.

That is definitely another possibility. I still think just based on the direction the rumors took (compared to normally knowing basically everything about the card weeks in advance of launch) that AMD must have been taken by surprise by a lower cost 980ti (I mean after all, the entire rest of the tech world was, at least at the start of the rumors and how quickly they became effectively confirmed...)

I asked about the die, though not the TDP.

Unfortunately though, I don't think it will be answered since he did mention no details about Polaris until another AMA later this year.

can anyone ask if we will see in Crimson working preset, like in catalyst, since they may be there, but they dont work, and u are forced to use catalyst in that case (i need to have 500mhz clock minimum, otherwise i got screen corruption with crimson)

First off, nobody is shouting (I'm not anyways). Just pointing out that a statement was made when they (I would assume) knew what the card could do. I'm not saying it's not possible the 980ti threw them for a loop. The release dates for all these cards were very close and maybe they thought it was going to be fast enough at 900mhz stock clocks? I don't know. Again, Just pointing it out is all. 

 

Found the video. If you go to 13:30 he starts talking about how "we built these for the overclockers" and goes on to talk about the power phase etc. 

 

Sounds to me like they were pretty confident in it's OC capabilities before the hard launch. Again, I'm not upset, nor am I shouting. If things changed significantly between this presentation and the hard launch, then I can understand and accept that as an answer. I'm just curious to know what happened.

I don't doubt that at all. I think AMD probably designed the chip around what they thought Nvidia would release then Nvidia released something a lot better than everyone thought. I'd bet the highly strung chips were meant to be like that from the start, but only the chip design people knew it had no headroom left.

 

Although the 2 Fury X's that I had OCd quite well up to 1195mhz on the core. I realized after I sold them that they were basically golden chips, but whatever. Some people got some good deals on those, haha.
